We are still held captive by a pain that can't be healed...

For the Blue People, a sword is a sacred object used in rituals to draw blood. But for other people, it is a tool for violence. And now I have to handle it as such...
Jessie, on Confronting Rowan

Jessie threatens Rowan with her blood-drawing knife, but can't bring herself to harm another person. Randy arrives on the scene and attacks Rowan, but quickly finds himself outmatched as Jessie and Mirna are carried away. Jessie fights against their kidnapper and distracts him long enough to free Mirna. She pleads with Mirna to run, but they are rescued by Eagle, Ray, and Idee the dragon tamer arriving on the back of the Seldian dragon.

With Jessie and Mirna safely away on the dragon, Eagle seeks out Rowan for a duel. Rowan attacks the already injured Randy, forcing Eagle to drag the priest out of the way before returning to the fight. Memories of Yuma's murder at Rowan's hands cause Eagle to fight with added ferocity, but their battle ends in a standstill with Rowan's dragon arm poised against Eagle's face, Eagle's sword at Rowan's throat, and the Lezak guard in position with bowmen aiming at Rowan. Rowan manages to escape into the Garicalege's underground hideout and avoids pursuit.

Due to her Half-Blooded status, Mirna is sent to live in Seldia. Things return to normal in Lezak. Ray transcribes a letter from Mirna to Jessie, Randy, and Eagle, updating them on how she's learning properly from a retired Blue Doctor and healing from her time spent in the Garicalege.

Rowan meets with Airi, the alchemist who transplanted his arm. She chides him for overexerting its power in his last fight, cautioning him that his body could still reject it. Although he's lost Mirna and his other half-blooded children, Rowan has set his sights on Jessie...

Chapter 7 Provides Examples of:

  • Badass Preacher: Randy, the former Captain of the Lezak Guard, throws himself between Rowan and Jessie and attacks the leader of the Garicalege so that Jessie and Mirna can escape. He is badly injured by Rowan's dragon claws, but continues to hold him off until Eagle arrives.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Eagle uses a curved saber when fighting Rowan. Randy uses a staff, the other guards use bows and arrows, while Rowan fights barehanded (if using a dragon arm tipped with razor sharp claws and that can shoot fire counts as "bare handed").
  • Indirect Kiss: Jessie slashes open her palm so that Eagle can drink her blood before his fight with Rowan. As she flies away on Ray's dragon, she kisses her own hand.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Rowan attacks an already downed Randy in order to distract Eagle.
  • One-Hit KO: The dragon tamer Idee is able to drop a Garicalege member with a single arrow to the back. Even more impressive is the fact that he was able to hit a non-vital area.
  • Rescue Romance: Eagle rescues Jessie from Rowan's clutches, narrowly avoiding a repeat of the the past when his wife was taken from him by Rowan's actions.
  • Sword Fight: In the duel between Eagle and Rowan, Eagle wields a curved saber while Rowan fights with his claw-tipped, fire-blasting dragon arm.
