Tropes

  • Artistic Licence – History: Benjamin Hornigold and his men are presented here as former Jacobites. No evidence of such exists.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Silver deliberately withholds a vital piece of the Urca schedule to keep Flint from killing him and then proposes that he stay with the crew in exchange for a share of the prize, promising that when the time comes he will reveal the final piece. When Flint points out he could just kill Silver anyway once they do have the gold, Silver just shrugs and all but admits he's hoping he won't.
  • He Knows Too Much: Billy thinks Silver is far too dangerous to leave alive and among the crew as he's the only other man who knows Singleton didn't steal the page, especially since the crew was ready to mutiny only a few days earlier.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When Billy confronts Morley over his hostility to Flint, Morley maintains that Flint wasn't a thief. When Billy presses that this would be accusing Billy of lying, which means a Duel to the Death, Morley backs down straight away as he knows he can't match Billy in a fight.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Jack Rackham manages to convince Flint and Vane to team up with each other to take the Urca. The prospect of stealing 5 million pieces of eight helps get Rackham out of hot water with the Ranger’s crew, and though Vane and Flint hate each other, Flint needs help to get the Urca, and taking it would be a good opportunity for Vane to get back in Eleanor’s good graces.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Charles Vane is the most calm and collected person at the negotiating table, something must be seriously wrong.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: When the Ranger crew confront Rackham for losing their money the previous episode, Rackham accepts responsibility for their loss but ''humbly'' offers to let them elect a new Quartermaster if they choose. Their ringleader, Hamund, sees right through it and pointedly tells him to get their money back fast or else.
  • Torture Is Ineffective: When Silver withholds the last piece of the Urca schedule, Billy suggests they just torture it out of him. Silver claims this won't work exactly because he has such a low tolerance for pain, he would say anything and everything.
  • You Need to Get Laid: When Billy talks among the crew to make sure they are content, one of them says the real mystery is why he still hasn’t gotten laid when they’ve been on land for two days.
