Recap / Big Time Rush S 2 E 14 Big Time Girl Group

Go To

Big Time Girl Group is an episode from Season 2 of Big Time Rush.

Big Time Rush suddenly faces major competition when Gustavo starts devoting all attention to a girl group, Kat's Crew, and they must fight back so they don't fade to obscurity like what happened with Gustavo's first boy band.

Meanwhile, Katie and Mrs. Knight try to find the perfect friends to hang out with.

Tropes:

  • All There in the Script: Kat's sidekicks are named Shayna and Jay Jay.
  • Basement-Dweller: Boyz in the Attic have been reduced to living in the attic of one of their band member's mother.
  • Crazy Cat Lady: Buddha Bob warns Katie and Mrs. Knight that if they don't find some friends, they will become this.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Angel Angel, the girl group who stole attention from Boyz in the Attic.
  • The Dividual: The members of Kat's Crew seem to function as a single entity, and are never seen apart.
  • Girls vs. Boys Plot: The plot revolves around BTR taking down Kat's Crew when they start to experience the same fate as BIA did with Angel Angel.
  • History Repeats: BTR almost faces the same fate like Gustavo's first boy band, Boyz in the Attic, who used to go off the charts until getting dethroned by girl group Angel Angel. Luckily they realize they're heading down that path and call off the feud with Kat's Krew, instead opting to work with them. The boys even convince Gustavo to sign the band on with Roquce Records.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Katie and Mrs. Knight's subplot revolves around this.
  • Jerkass: Implicitly, this is the reason Gustavo fired Boyz in the Attic, not because he was replacing them with a girl group. After tricking BTR into buying groceries for them, they reveal that they pulled several immature pranks on Angel Angel in an attempt at sabotaging their (and by extension Gustavo's) work, and as suggested by Kendall, they neglected to actually practice their music, believing getting rid of a rival group was more important.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kat's Krew add fuel to the fire by treating Big Time Rush like has-beens from minute one, and take pride at the prospect of ruining someone else's career to pave the way for their own. However, when BTR sticks up for them when Gustavo decides not to sign them, they let them have the song they love back, indicating that the two groups just started off on the wrong foot.
  • Language Barrier: The first mother-daughter duo Katie and Mrs. Knight try to befriend seem to be from a foreign country, as they don't speak English aside from "Yes we are."
  • Punny Name: Kat's name sounds like a cat, which are natural enemies of dogs.
    Kat: Looks like the cats...
Kat's sidekicks: Are taking over the doghouse!
    Kat's Crew: Meow!
  • Special Edition Title: The five-note vocal melody which segues into the opening theme is done by Kat's Crew.
  • Special Guest: Cymphonique Miller as Kat.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Katie and Mrs. Knight trying to find friends — none of them are good. One is a blonde duo who don't speak English well, one is a clown and mime act, and one happens to be a pair of crooks planning a heist .
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Gustavo recognizes that kicking Big Time Rush to the curb in favor of Kat's Krew would make him one, in light of how they single-handedly put him back on the map as a big name music producer. As such, he eventually chooses them.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite being signed on by Gustavo as a second Rocque Records group, Kat's Krew never appear again after this episode.
