Recap / Big Hero 6: The Series S3E01 "The Hyper-Potamus Pizza-Party-Torium"

Go To

Fred and Hiro have to deal with Noodle Burger Boy kidnapping robotic food service mascots to create a new family for himself while also dealing with the possibility that Honey Lemon, GoGo and Wasabi might be ready to move on.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Noodle Burger Boy succeeds in reprogramming the three mascot bots into his evil sisters.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Though she's based on a panda, Hangry Panda shows that pandas are quite perilous in their own right.
  • The Bus Came Back: Sara from "Killer App" returns, having moved on from Noodle Burger to the titular Pizza-Party-Torium.
  • Continuity Nod: Honey Lemon's fear of hippos returns, which becomes an issue when she's greeted by Hyper-Potamus.
  • The Cameo:
    • A simulation of Obake and the Mad Jacks are quickly dispatched by Big Hero 6 in the start of the episode.
    • Karmi shows up on Basemax's screen as one of Fred's potential replacements for the other team members. So does a mime, and so does a crane.
  • Danger Room Cold Open: You know this is going to happen the moment the team starts fighting all their rogues combined in the beginning of the episode.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Pirate Noodle Burger Boy is seen briefly in the new opening, meaning he'll very likely return.
  • Escaped Animal Rampage: As a distraction while kidnapping Hangry Panda, Noodle Burger Boy releases a mountain gorilla from the zoo that beats up Fred and Baymax.
  • Evolving Credits: The team has returned to their original outfits, Pirate NBB returns, and the shot with the Call-Forward of the season's villains has changed almost entirely, with only NBB himself, Momakase and Hardlight remaining from Season 2.
  • Extra-Long Episode: With the series moving to pairs of 15-minute episodes, this episode fits the trope in the context of the season even though it's the same length as episodes in past seasons.
  • Hulk Speak: Crushroom, fittingly, talks like this.
  • Killer Gorilla: While at the zoo, Hiro, Fred and Baymax contend with a gorilla let out of its enclosure. While not particularly vicious, it does toss around Fred and Baymax like toys.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • Just like he referred to the start of the last season as the beginning of a "Phase Two", Fred refers to the team's upped combat prowess as the start of a "Phase Three".
    • When confronting the simulation of the Mad Jacks, Go Go notes they haven't seem them in a while, referencing how they have not been encountered since Season 1.
  • The Moving Experience: Fred and Hiro worry that with Wasabi, Honey Lemon and GoGo graduating and looking for jobs, they might end up moving away, leaving only half a team.
  • Mushroom Man: Crushroom, a Hulk-like delivery bot.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Due to graduating from SFIT in the last episode, Wasabi, Go Go, and Honey Lemon are now focusing on finding employment in their civilian lives.
  • The One Guy: Noodle Burger Boy becomes this after establishing his new "family", since every other mascot is his "sister".
  • Social Media Before Reason: Gogo has to push away a woman too busy taking selfies to get out of the way of the runaway Ferris wheel.
  • Suck E. Cheese's: The titular Hyper-Potamus Pizza Party-Torium, which has a robotic hippo mascot and an indoor Ferris wheel, which is cut loose in the climax.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: As pointed out in New Job as the Plot Demands, now that Go Go, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi have graduated from SFIT, the next step in their personal lives involves finding post-college jobs.
  • Tempting Fate: Hiro boldly claims that nothing can stop Big Hero 6 now after a Danger Room Cold Open goes extremely well. Nothing except the team itself going their separate ways, apparently. The team's effectiveness takes a hit because Honey Lemon, Go Go and Wasabi can't show up on time anymore.
  • Villainous Legacy: Noodle Burger Boy is still following Obake's programming to do evil, who now is driven to recreate his "family" as the only one of them left around. This leads him to use the reprogramming chips to convert other robotic mascots to evil.
  • Virtual Training Simulation: The episode begins with the team dealing with a simulated multi-villain attack to test a new bunch of combat strategies.
