The Doctor offers to take Rose to Slough, but instead the two wind up meeting the Chevalier D'Éon, just in time for an alien invasion.


  • Continuity Nod: The Doctor takes up fencing, mentioning he's had some practice, though not in a while.
  • Foreshadowing: Rose claims that she doesn't believe in the devil, foreshadowing her and the Doctor's encounter with the Beast.
  • Historical Domain Character: The Chevalier D’Éon.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The Doctor says he hates namedroppers, and adds that his friend Oscar Wilde was also really bad at it.
  • Insult Misfire: When Rose and the Chevalier encounter Joxer and Hempel, Joxer calls them "the interesting one, and the stewflesh." The Chevalier instantly responds "I'll thank you not to call my companion stewflesh."
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": The Doctor is overjoyed to meet the Chevalier.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Consortium of the Obsidian Asp.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: When the Doctor criticises the Chevalier's namedropping, Rose makes a sardonic comment about "people like that", which passes completely over his head.
  • Pronoun Trouble: Rose gets a little confused by whether to refer to the Chevalier as masculine or feminine. The Doctor thinks it doesn't matter either way.
