The Doctor and Molly land on the spaceship Orpheus 4. They meet Liv Chenka, who previously met the Doctor in The Traitor, though the Doctor only recalls meeting her in Robophobia. The crew are travelling to the edge of the Universe but are attacked by the Eminence. However it turns out Liv is being controlled by a spy from the energy companies, who have sent her back in time to take the energy source. Liv, with Molly's help, overrides the control. She reveals she is dying due to radiation exposure while escaping the Daleks and faked her medical records to get onto this ship, not expecting to come back. The Doctor reverses the time tides, sending the Eminence back, and saves Liv.

Meanwhile in 1970s London Dr Sally Armstrong is saved from a car hitting her by a man called Harcourt Diath... Three guesses who that is? No, the first two guesses don't count.

Tropes:

  • Grand Theft Me: Liv Chenka has been taken over by Randall Verant, a spy for the energy companies.
  • Have We Met Yet?: Liv Chenka and the Doctor from their perception have already met. However for Liv this is the second meeting between her and 8, for 8 it is the first.

  • Redemption Equals Death: Vi, who has spent her time as a cowardly opportunist and being altogether insufferable, finally manages to do the right thing when she holds back the Eminence long enough for the Doctor to defeat them.
  • Sleeper Ship: The Orpheus 4.
  • Time Travel for Fun and Profit: Randall Varant has time travelled onto the ship and has been setting up satellites to transmit the energy back to Earth space.
