When Max dozes off before a double feature, Ben and Gwen are left to save the drive-in by themselves as the evil magician Hex brings the movie monster "That" to life, and unleashes him on the unsuspecting moviegoers.

Tropes:

  • The Bait: When Ben turns into an Omni-Enhanced XLR8 with lights, Gwen suggests that he acts as bait for the light-hungry monster.
    • Hex, much to his irritation, also plays this role later in the episode in order to be purposely eaten by "That" so he can recharge his powers in the pool of light sloshing around inside its stomach.
  • Drive-In Theater: Max takes his grandkids to an old black and white monster movie at a drive-in, much to their boredom.
  • Eaten Alive: Ben throws Hex down "That's" throat in order for him to reach the light energy that the monster drank and return to full strength.
  • Energy Absorption: The monster absorbs light in order to grow bigger and more powerful.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: As it grows more powerful, "That" becomes more monstrous as well and at one point even gets a line of eyeballs down its tongue.
Ben: Is it me or is he getting uglier?
  • Heavy Sleeper: Max manages to sleep through a giant monster rampaging through the drive-in and said monster literally exploding.
  • I Owe You My Life: The only thing that keeps Hex from destroying Ben immediately after he helps him get his powers back is that he owes Ben a life debt. They are now even and the fight will continue another day.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Ben thinks he knows everything about monster movies, but all his predictions end up being way off.
  • Miracle-Gro Monster: As "That" continues absorbing more light, it grows bigger and bigger.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Going off of old monster movie tropes, Ben decides to fight the light-eating monster by...feeding it more light. He thinks this will cause it to blow up, but instead it just gets bigger and stronger.
  • Pick on Someone Your Own Size: Ben lampshades the ridiculousness of the vendetta Hex (a Really 700 Years Old sorcerer) has for Ben (an actual child):
Ben: What's the problem? Conscience won't let you take down a 10-year-old?
  • Rhyming Title
  • Shout-Out: The monster movie Max took Ben and Gwen to see is a double reference. The monster itself is based on the Gill Man from Creature from the Black Lagoon. Its name, "That", is a reference to the movie The Thing.
  • Swamp Monster: "That", the monster in the old black and white movie the family is watching.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: Ben is surprised by the monster's bad breath:
Ben: You'd think a monster that only ate light would have better breath!
