Recap / Batman Wayne Family Adventures Episode 104 Mask Off

Go To

While the Bat-Family is trying to save a group of hostages from a building under a bomb threat, Red Hood runs into trouble when the little girl he's trying to retrieve is more terrified of him than the threat to her life. With only seconds on the clock, can he figure out a way to prove he's there to help?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Cathartic Exhalation: Oracle keeps cutting in to tell Red Hood the increasingly small amount of time he has to escape before the bomb explodes, and he doesn't give her confirmation that he's out before it goes off. She heaves a sigh of relief on finally getting the message that Red Hood and his assigned rescuee are safe.
  • Crisis Catch And Carry: All of the Bat-kids escort one of the hostages to make sure they get out safely. Signal takes the direct approach and just picks up the little old lady he's assigned.
  • Dramatic Unmask: To convince the hostage to let him save her, Jason takes off his "Red Hood" mask to reveal a perfectly normal face. Seeing this, the girl isn't afraid and lets Jason get her out.
  • Friend to All Children: Jason is desperate to save the hostage he was assigned, a young girl. When she hides from him out of fear, he figures out what's scaring her and takes his mask off to calm her down. Then he spends several seconds calmly coaxing her to trust him as the bomb continues counting down. By the end of the strip, she's sitting in the crook of his arm playing with the Red Hood mask.
  • Race Against the Clock: The entire episode centers on the Bat-Family trying to evacuate the building before it blows up. With less than a minute left on the clock, Red Hood struggles to coax the final hostage, a small girl, out of hiding. He doesn't quite get out in time, though he does get clear enough to survive unscathed.
  • Save the Villain: Jason hauls one of the hostage-takers who he knocked unconscious to safety.
  • Shout-Out: Possibly to Spider-Man: in one of the live-action movies, Spider-Man attempts to save a child from a burning building, but they're scared of his costume. He briefly takes off his mask to show that he isn't so scary before masking back up and saving the child. AKA, exactly what Jason does here.
  • Suddenly Shouting: The longer it takes Jason to get out of the building, the louder Oracle gets.
  • Tears of Fear: The youngest hostage cries in fear as she hides while Jason tries to reach her.
  • Terrifying Rescuer: Jason's problem. Even though he's trying to help, all the little girl sees is a big guy in leather and a face-covering red mask who wants to grab her, leading her to hide where Jason can't reach her.
  • Terror Hero: Deconstructed; Jason's leather costume, iconic red mask, and rough demeanor work well for scaring the crooks he fights...but they can also scare the civilians he's trying to save. Jason ends up having to spend valuable time gaining the girl's trust after she squirms away from the scary figure reaching for her.
