  • Balance Between Good and Evil: Equinox placed both the Question and Grodd in a Death Trap. He chastises Grodd for once again attempting to take over the world, but he also intends to kill the Question for the sake of maintaining proper balance.
  • Berserk Button: At some point during the adventure, our heroes prompt Aquaman to summon the sea life of Adam's adopted planet. A couple of the planet's equivalent of belugas whale come along, and when Adam plans to use them to help on their journey, it sets off Aquaman to shoo them off before they can get into any real trouble. Unbeknownst to either Adam or Batman, it hits a raw nerve for the grieving Aquaman to so much as suggest endangering belugas.
  • Foreshadowing: Aquaman is introduced singing a whale song, then shoos away the horned whales he summoned. It turns out that his failure to save whales from being hunted is the cause of his melancholy.
  • Heroic BSoD: Aquaman is in one throughout most of the episode, due to his failure to stop a whale hunt. He's nothing short of melancholic and pessimistic at nearly every turn of the adventure. He gets better.
  • He's Back!: When Adam is faced with his Darkest Hour, he sadly gives up, which unwittingly prompts Aquaman to overcome his own Heroic BSoD. What follows is Aquaman giving a therapeutic Rousing Speech that not only helps Adam see they can still win, but simultaneously fills Aquaman with the hope and strength to carry on and still be a hero.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Aquaman being incredulous over Adam delivering hammy one-liners in the face of danger.
  • It's All My Fault: Aquaman over failing to stop a whale hunt.
  • Men of Sherwood: The many unnamed Rann soldiers aren't pushovers. In one battle, several ground soldiers cause an enormous Walking Tank to retreat by firing on it with hand weapons. After the Gordanians get a game-changing weapon, the soldiers fire as they retreat and are among those who listen to and approve of Aquaman's Rousing Speech.
  • Not Quite Dead: Equinox seemingly falls to his death, but he immediately reveals that he survived.
  • Oh, Crap!: Adam has one when the Zeta Beam wears off before he can save Alana.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Batman is surprised to see Aquaman so sad, and even more surprised when Aquaman merely wishes him luck in his mission instead of boldly inviting himself along.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: A variation. When Adam so easily gives up any hope of saving his wife and his adopted planet from the invaders, Aquaman not only restores his faith as a hero, but in the process, overcomes his grief about being unable to save the belugas.
  • Rousing Speech: Aquaman gives one to Adam.
  • Sadistic Choice: Equinox tries to force one on Batman, saying he can only save Question or Grodd from the Death Trap but not both. It fails because Batman anticipates that Equinox would have a mechanism to ensure there wouldn't be an unequal amount of good or evil to be destroyed.
  • We Will Meet Again: What Equinox promises to Batman before escaping.
