Recap / Avengers Assemble S 4 E 25 All Things Must End

Go To

The Beyonder is defeated, Battleworld is no more, and Earth, Asgard, and other worlds are restored.

The Secret Wars are over and everything is back to normal, but there is just one small problem: Dr. Strange gave Loki the Eye of Agamotto to help the Avengers. Now wielding the power of Sorcerer Supreme, he betrays everyone as he usually does and prepares to take over Asgard and beyond.

All the remaining heroes unite to counterattack, but how can they take the Eye back if it must be given back willingly?

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Mundanity: In the comics, Jarnbjorn was an axe designed toward the goal of killing Celestials. Here, it's just a completely random axe Thor finds when he needs a weapon.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Common to Odin's attitude toward Jane in both the comics and films is his being a massive jerkass to her, on account of being a mortal. Here, he's anything but, thanking Jane and rewarding her for saving the universe.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Loki may have betrayed him and tried to kill him several times, including in this episode alone, but Thor still winces in horror at what happens to him.
  • Apocalypse How: If the All-Dark takes over Yggdrasil then it would destroy it, which would then take the entire universe with it.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: "By Odin's beard, I am evil!"
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Thor warns Loki against using the All-Dark, which could potentially wipe out everything everywhere, but he doesn't listen. In the end, it gets Loki.
  • Heroic BSoD: Jane runs off to have a quiet moment, figuring she's way out of her depth. Wasp and Ms. Marvel manage to get her back into the game by pointing out all the things she's done over the season.
  • Hold the Line: While Thor, Jane and Doctor Strange fight Loki, all the others fight against an endless horde of Mindless Ones Loki's tried to set on New York.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Loki descends into some truly impressive paranoid denial here. When the Eye of Agamotto shows him what'll happen when Yggdrasil goes, he immediately tears it off and starts screaming about how everyone's deceiving him.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When Thor accuses Loki of being mad, Loki denies it... while sounding quite, quite mad.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Thor, Jane and Loki recreate the "For Midgard! For Asgard! For myself!" scene from Walt Simonson's run on Thor. The difference here being Loki's line is less candid declaration and more being a troll.
    • By the mid-point, Thor has nearly recreated his look as the Unworthy Thor from Jason Aaron's run, save for still having both arms and a shirt. He even manages to find an axe that looks like Jarnbjorn.
  • Ominous Obsidian Ooze: The All-Dark, which Odin kept sealed in the Casket of Darkness. Loki decides to take it out and play with. With a boost from Loki's magic, it becomes pretty much unstoppable.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Loki decides he would quite happily destroy the entire universe if he thinks that will get rid of Thor, being too far gone to realize that would kill him as well.
  • Uncertain Doom: The episode ends being insanely vague as to just what the All-Dark has actually done to Loki, beyond obviously hurting a lot, and doesn't answer if it's actually killed him or not. If it has, Thor seems astoundingly chipper afterward.
  • Worth It: Ant-Man figures Hulk will be furious at him for using a growth disc on him to stop the Mindless Ones, but it'll be worth it.
