After narrowly surviving the horrors of Shiganshina's fall Eren and Mikasa manage to get to a escape boat with a number of other refuges including Armin. However, just before they leave, an Armoured Titan appears and smashes the gate to Wall Maria thus allowing the Titan Horde to invade the land. In the wake of these nightmarish incidents Eren makes a vow to kill every single Titan he can find and drive them from his home.
Tropes:
- Death Glare: Eren gives one after witnessing the destruction that the Titans bring and vows to kill every single one he can find.
- Foreshadowing:
- Mikasa remembers a bloody scene from her past in a brief flashback and notes that Mrs. Yeager's death last episode is similar to that event.
- Eren has a dream that shows his father trying to inject him with something and telling him to use the key he usually wears. When Eren wakes up he mysteriously has the key around his neck.
- From Bad to Worse: Things were already pretty awful when the Colossal Titan kicked down Shinganshina's gate but, due to its status as a outlier settlement, at least the damage the Titans could cause was minimum. However then the Armoured Titan appears and smashes through Wall Maria's gate thus allowing them to reach one of the interior sections of the wall. This eventually leads to 20% of humanity dying of in order to reduce the potential famine.
- Necessarily Evil: Played With. After Wall Maria falls the number of refuges that transfer over into Wall Rose begin driving the overall population into a famine. In order to preserve food 250,000 people, 20% of the Walls population, are send into Wall Maria in a knowingly doomed mission to reclaim land from the Titans. While this action does ultimately prevent a famine the price is seen as being too extraordinarily high to be worth it (especially by Armin who lost his grandfather in the excursion.)
- Nothing Is the Same Anymore: After the loss of Shiganshina's district to the Titans, the people feel that they are no longer safe inside the Walls. A hundred years of relative peace is gone forever.
- Parting-Words Regret: Eren is dismayed once he realises that the last time he saw his mother before her death the two of them were having a fight over his decision to join the Survey Corps.
- Talk to the Fist: Mikasa gives Eren a swift punch in the face once he starts ranting to Armin about how undignified it is to be accepting charity from cowards like parasites. She promptly reminds him that they can't exactly be picky where they get their food at the moment and that they essentially are parasites.
