Recap / Arrested Development S3E9 "S.O.B.s"

Go To

To get enough money to hire a new family lawyer, everyone has to pitch in to prepare for the upcoming company fundraiser, aptly named "Save Our Bluths".

The Arrested Development episode "S.O.B.s" provides examples of:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The Narrator makes pleas for the audience to spread word about the show.
  • Callback: The lessons George taught his kids using J. Walter Weatherman.
  • Celebrity Star: The episode features several Special Guests, but a large portion of the plot revolves around getting Andy Richter, whom George Sr. didn't even want.
  • Continuity Nod: Larry Middleman, George's surrogate, reappears as a cameo at the Save Our Bluths party.
  • Death by Racism: The Narrator reveals that the old racist lady dies after she says GOB could "charm the black off a telegram boy." She does die when she chokes on Buster's thumb.
  • Ignored Confession: It's the second time after "Pier Pressure" that Michael ignores his son confessing about his Kissing Cousins relationship with Maeby.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: They obliquely address rumored Channel Hopping to HBO and Showtime. They also discuss "relatability" as if they were TV executives trying to make the show more appealing.
    • When one of the Richter brothers (who works as a stuntman) pins Michael to a wall, he notes that Michael isn't actually in any danger and is in complete control.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Tobias brings up someone named Freddie Wilson while talking, prompting the other characters to say they "don't get that reference". This doubled as an in-joke about how some people thought the show's inability to gain mainstream appeal was caused by its numerous and sometimes obscure jokes about pop-culture and topical references.
  • Ratings Stunt: Parodied to the hilt throughout the episode, from adding in unnecessary 3D scenes (preceded by a caption instructing viewers to put on their 3D glasses) to making out the final scene of the episode is being broadcast live.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: Before the opening credits, a narrator announces that "one of these characters will die," while every main character flashes on-screen, as well as an old lady who is unique to the episode. However, about halfway through the episode, Ron Howard simply tells the audience that she is the one who's going to die.
