Recap / Archer S 14 E 1 The Anglerfish Stratagem

Go To

Lana's term as leader of the Agency commences as a new era for the gang begins. In one of their assignments, Archer, Pam, and Ray go to Paris to help an Interpol agent investigate a gang of jewel thieves.

Episode Tropes:

  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends as Archer and his group is knocked out by a member of the Vanguard.
  • Constructive Body Disposal: To Lana's chagrin, a rotting corpse is found inside the walls of her office, and one of her new employees spots it and brings it up to the rest trying to learn how there's even a corpse in the building. Lana manages to keep them from ever leaking it out by passive-aggressively pointing out that they have to expect a lot of "shit" as a spy agency (but will increase their pay by 5% if they remain quiet about it).
  • Continuity Nod: Pam and Ray tell Zara that the reason Archer is so distrustful of her is because his daughter was previously kidnapped by a criminal posing as an Interpol liaison.
  • Genre Savvy: Archer has many initial impressions about Zara Khan in the way how she does things that she's surely The Mole from Interpol. Turns out he's right, except for the part that she didn't want to sell the Agency out.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: At one point, Zara interrogates a person for a diamond by threatening to either cut off his pinkie or shoot his pug. Or both. Once she gets her information, Zara admits she was not going to shoot the pug as she is not that heartless. The pinkie on the other hand...
  • Mirror Character: Lana goes from being a female Archer to being just like Malory. At one point, Cheryl almost calls her "Ms Archer," to Lana's huge dismay. But then, Lana starts to embrace the role when she comes up with an idea to keep her employees from ever leaking out the info about the corpse found in her office's walls.
  • Precision F-Strike: At first, Lana tries to be as transparent and patient as possible around both her comrades and newest employees of the Agency. However, as the plot continues around the dead body and Archer's team on their latest mission, she becomes irritable enough to deliver this twice.
Lana: You know what they say: People people who live in glass houses... are fucking morons.
  • Time Skip: While it is not known how much time has passed since Season 13's finale, it is enough to see the Agency up to full force, complete with a new drone group to replace the ones that left after the FBI raid in the Season 5 premiere.
  • The Unreveal: The corpse's identity is never revealed, nor is it explained how it ended up in the office's walls in the first place.
  • We Need a Distraction: Zara has Pam and Ray to distract the guests and guards at a private party while she and Archer steal a gem from the art exhibit. Ray's past trauma as a waiter and hesitation to disrupt the Archduke's party prevents him from going through with it. As such, Pam instigates the fight for them both.
