After watching a movie and learning about true love, and subsequently falling in love with the movie’s female lead, Apple is determined to experience love himself. However, the object of his affection, Romaine Lettuce, only likes tall guys.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing / Irony: It is revealed near the end that Romaine Lettuce actually has had a husband... who is a rather short Mr. Pancake.
  • Be Yourself: Apple finally learns how to be happy with how he is and that a relationship that starts with pretending to be something you’re not can never work.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Apple wants to be in love because Snow Tater depicts it as a bath filled with laughing bubbles, not because he actually understands what love is.
  • Cutting Back to Reality: As Apple is having his Nightmare Sequence Imagine Spot in which the once-laughing bubbles from his love bath are now attacking him, it cuts back to him cowering from absolutely nothing in real life.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Apple’s papier mâché head extension knocks into a hanging flower basket, which causes a butterfly to fly into a flock of pigeons, which causes a pigeon to fly into a plane, which causes the plane to turn sideways and cut through a cloud with its wing, which causes a downpour, which causes his papier mâché to disintegrate.
  • Expy: Snow Tater, the main character of “Mount of Hunger: The Hungering,” is one of Jon Snow from Game of Thrones.
  • Give Me a Sign: Apple believes that love will guide him to Romaine Lettuce and is encouraged when, through a series of coincidences, a large banner announcing her signing event falls on him.
  • Height Angst: Apple, at first, doesn’t find any problem with Romaine Lettuce liking tall guys due to him thinking he’s tall. He quickly finds out however that he is, in fact, short and does everything he can to change that.
  • Repeat Cut: When Apple trips and breaks his stem, it’s replayed from three different angles as well as in slow motion.
  • Reveal Shot: Apple has Onion stretch his legs downward while holding onto a pull-up bar in an attempt to get taller. As the camera is zoomed in on Onion, it looks like it’s working at first. Then the camera zooms out to reveal that it wasn’t Apple’s legs that were stretching, but his fingers.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Apple frequently exhibits this trope throughout the series, but he really ramps it up with the following line:
Apple: The meet and greet with Romaine Lettuce is in 20 minutes and it would be greet to meet my sweet with my height not petite to complete my receipt of love’s heartbeat!
  • Severely Specialized Store: The city Apple and Onion live in seems to have plenty of these including a “Tall Shoe Store” when Apple needed to be taller and “Raincoats 4 U” when it was raining.
  • Show Within a Show: The episode starts out with Apple & Onion watching the movie, “Mount of Hunger: The Hungering” which appears to be a reference to Game of Thrones.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Apple’s final solution for appearing tall when he goes to meet Romaine Lettuce is to pull this gag with Onion. It goes about as well as you’d expect an apple stacked on top of a green onion trying to walk would go.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Apple in this Punctuated! For! Emphasis! expression. Although, in this world, bread may actually be god.
    Apple: Oh. My. Bread.
