Taylor is about to graduate from high school but learns her name isn't on the list. She discovers it's because Katie didn't return a library book she borrowed in Taylor's name three years ago, forcing her to appeal to Principal Ablin. Ablin's demand? He wants a wedding to Maria in two days, on a budget of $200. The only way to make it work is to hold the ceremony at graduation. Meanwhile, Oliver is devastated when Cooper informs him that his parents are selling their Westport estate and moving to Palm Beach, where he will be expected to attend school. Anna-Kat (looking different from when we last saw her) is excited to go to sleep-over camp in the summer, but Franklin warns her how dangerous it can be, though he may have ulterior motives...
First appearance of Giselle Eisenberg as Anna-Kat #2. Also the last appearance of Carly Hughes as a series regular (her scenes were shot in March, before the pandemic shutdown ended production of season 4).
Tropes:
- Break the Cutie: Subverted! The trend of people who are important to Oliver abruptly leaving him looks to be continuing when Cooper announces he's moving, but Katie and Greg offer to let Cooper stay with them until he finishes high school, and Cooper accepts.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: Katy Mixon speaks directly to camera in the same shot that reveals the new actress playing Anna-Kat, saying "Yeah, kids change."
- The Bus Came Back: Eyo Summers, unseen since season 2, returns as class valedictorian.
- Call-Back: In Cooper's speech at his "last" dinner with the Ottos, he leads off with a number of unflattering points. He had done much the same in the season 1 episode "The Walk", in his speech defending Katie as a mother. Both times, Oliver coolly interrupts him by telling him to "move to your next point".
- First Kiss: It's only on the cheek, but Anna-Kat and Franklin share theirs.
- Hidden Depths: Trip turns out to be ordained to perform weddings, after getting it done to make a wedding between Anna-Kat's ponies "official".
- Lampshade Hanging: The casting change for Anna-Kat. See Breaking the Fourth Wall above.
- Wedding Episode: Principal Ablin and Maria are wed at the graduation ceremony by Trip, who is lured to the stage in order to give a speech as class "maladictorian" (the student with the lowest grades).
