Recap / American Housewife S 4 E 14 A Very English Scandal

Go To

Oliver must make good on his pledge not to deny that he is gay after he was maliciously outed by Will Hansen, and much to his surprise (and Will's), things seem to be going much better than expected for him. Meanwhile, after deciding that Viv needs her own Greg Otto, Katie sets her up with Greg Otto... the British version. But when things start going too well for them, she has second thoughts. Finally, Taylor advises Anna-Kat that the time has come to throw away her beloved ponies, but Anna-Kat eventually finds a new home for them.

Tropes:

  • Armored Closet Gay: Will Hansen decides to complete his malicious "outing" of Oliver by bullying him. To his surprise, his jock teammates shut him down immediately and praise Oliver for having the confidence to come out, which gives him pause.
  • Coming of Age Story: Anna-Kat must finally part with her beloved ponies. In the end she finds them a good home with Viv's daughter.
  • Coming-Out Story: Will finally does come out of the closet for real at the end, and even denies that Oliver is actually gay for good measure.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Principal Ablin naturally assumes that Cooper is the newly-outed Oliver's boyfriend, and doesn't even give Cooper a chance to deny it. To Cooper's credit, he rolls with it much like Oliver does. (He later claims that girls think much more highly of him for having a gay best friend.)
  • Hidden Depths: It turns out that Viv is smarter than she lets on and is captivated by British Greg's intellect.
  • Jerk Jock: Will, who is an Armored Closet Gay who maliciously outed Oliver. Averted by his friends, who are extremely supportive of Oliver, who they barely even know, and demand that Will stop bullying him.
  • Love at First Sight: British Greg and Viv hit it off immediately.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Oliver, although as far as anyone knows he did out himself. Katie asks him if he actually is gay (having believed - and hoped - that he is for literally years now) but he denies it.
  • Transparent Closet: Played with. In the opinion of Oliver's ex-girlfriend (we aren't told which one), his coming out makes a lot of sense in retrospect. Oliver isn't sure how to take that.
