Recap / American Dad S 7 E 5 White Rice

Go To

Steve brings home a female fish to keep Klaus company, while Francine finds out that Stan has been having everything about her that didn't involve being an obedient housewife repressed via hypnosis for the past twenty years, and her reawakened memories inspire her to become a stand-up comic.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Stan's intrusion on the show's set ends up getting some big laughs from the audience.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Klaus marries the fish that Steve brought home from the carnival, and soon comes to regret it. By the end of the episode, he's burying the fish in the backyard.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Stan had Francine's memories erased to avoid talking about their problems, one of which was the idea of her father moving in with them. At the end of the episode, they finally talk about it...and Francine says she thinks her father living with them is a terrible idea. Furthermore, Francine's stand-up career wouldn't have meant the end of her and Stan's marriage, as he could simply relocate for his job and come with her.
  • Death of a Child: In one of Francine's repressed memories, Hayley had a twin brother named Bailey and she suggested vaccinating them both, to which Stan said they'd talk about it later.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After having Francine's memory erased every year to avoid dealing with their problems, Stan always goes out for a sandwich and never offers the hypnotherapist one. After 20 years of this, the hypnotherapist snaps and makes Francine remember all 20 years of her repressed memories. This in turn allows Francine to reignite her stand-up career, and she leaves Stan for being an unsupportive prick.
  • Driven to Suicide: Roger's persona in this episode, as he kills off the character when the show is cancelled.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: The reaction of the Asian community to White Rice. It may be funny to other ethnicities but to them it's incredibly racist.
  • Exact Words: After Stan reveals he's done everything Francine wanted to talk about over the years to make her happy, Francine clarifies she wanted to talk about whether or not they should do those things as she wanted Stan's input because they were things which would effect them both.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Every year, Francine storms over to Greg and Terry's house, strips down, gets in their hot tub, and rants about how Stan doesn't want to help take care of her aging father. They mention she does this every year, but she has no memory of it because Stan has them erased shortly afterwards.
  • Short-Runners: An exaggerated version happens in-universe with Francine's sitcom, which gets cancelled not only on the first episode, but after one joke.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Stan tries to rile Francine up before she performs in front of a bunch of Fox executives, which leads her to puke on stage. He then finds out she spun it into a routine about Mongolian barbeque and got her a sitcom.
