Tropes seen in this episode:

  • "Angry Black Man" Stereotype: Both Hoarce and Coke, the two Black burglars, are clearly this as they vent their anger over perceived oppression over a white-dominated society to the Bunkers, all at gunpoint.
  • But I Read a Book About It: Mike tries to palacate Hoarce and Coke whom Archie has racially insulted, claiming Archie never knew what it was like to grow up in the inner city. "Oh, and you do?" one of the burglars responds. Mike is forced to admit he learned most about the issues facing poor minorities in his sociology course.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf ... which Edith unwittingly uses to scare off the burglars. Her singing is oh sssssssoooooooooooo horrifically bad that Hoarce and Coke can't stand much more and that robbing them isn't worth it. In the tag, Mike decides that using Edith's voice as a burglar alarm would be much cheaper – and far more effective(!) – than any expensive security system.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Hoarce trying to tell Mike, in not so many words, that he too never truly knew what it was like to grow up in the slums and that the book-learning he has is all bull.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Hoarce and Coke call Mike on his beliefs, saying (in not so many words) that his attitudes are based on book learning and not being truly empathetic to their situation. In other words, when it comes down to it, Mike is no better than Archie.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: In the tag scene, Mike announces that Hoarce and Coke were eventually apprehended by police.
