Go To

Coach Hudson from Toledo State University offers Spencer to graduate from South Crenshaw High early so he can enroll at the university and be ready at the spring games, but something unexpected will welcome him there. Meanwhile, Jordan, upon being told by Coach Montes that no NCAA Division I school is eyeing him, is encouraged by Billy to sign up for junior college teams instead, Asher tries to get his spirit back upon being informed that Coastal California University has just canceled his football scholarship, and Coop struggles to tell Layla that she is quitting her label.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • A Father to His Men: At the end, Billy gives a pep talk to the Chargers, stating that they will remain family even after graduation. He says it while looking at Spencer, implicitly saying that he has forgiven him.
  • First Love: Asher laments to Layla that in the past 18 months (since the show began), he's lost a lot, including his first love. Layla assumes he means Olivia, but when they talk after having sex at her studio, Asher reveals that Layla is his first love.
  • Friends with Benefits: After she manages to sign up an artist, Layla and Asher make out at the studio, which they both shrug off as a friends' thing.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum:
    • When Spencer continuously dodges her questions about his issues with Billy, Grace calls him "Spencer Alonzo James" to get his attention.
    • Grace also does this to Billy so they can have a private talk about Spencer.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Spencer is about to have sex with Olivia when he gets a call from Billy for a team meeting.
  • Let's Wait a While: Spencer and Olivia talk about how they will have sex when the time is right for them. Both are nervous because of how much they love each other; Spencer infers as much when Coop teases him, while Olivia talks to Nurse Joy about it, worried it's about her sobriety but realising from their talk that it's because it's real with Spencer and so it's bigger than the times she's had sex before.
  • Saying Too Much: Asher lets it slip that Coop is quitting music in front of Layla.
  • The Scapegoat: Billy admits that he isn't really angry at Spencer, but rather it's easier to do it than come to the terms with the fact that he screwed up with Jordan.
  • Sex with the Ex: Layla and Asher have sex in her studio after she signs a new client and they celebrate. They talk about how it's not anything more, but both are happy with it happening and that it's just sex between friends, as Layla terms it.
  • Their First Time: Discussed. Olivia and Spencer talk about their first time together and how it means a lot to both of them because their love for each other is bigger than what they've experienced before and they are both nervous for that reason.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Grace gives Billy a tongue lashing for treating Spencer like crap and urges him to admit the reason for his attitude.
    • Layla is mad at Coop for not telling about her decision to quit sooner, as it means that her last three weeks trying to cover up for her were a waste of time and money.
