Recap / All American S3 E11 "The Bigger Picture"

Go To

Spencer is offered a slot at Texas North University by Coach Romelo, on the condition that he will be willing to craft a social justice platform. Crenshaw is holding a vigil for Tamika Pratt, a black university student killed by the police for sleeping on the side of the road, with Coop as a keynote speaker. The vigil gives an idea for Olivia as a subject for her podcast, especially when she learns that her mother has a copy of the unreleased police cam footage. Meanwhile, Jordan tries to move on after he is benched from football for the rest of the year, while Grace and Carter unexpectedly become closer.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Be Yourself: Coop's video convinces Spencer not to take the TNT's offer by sacrificing his integrity.
  • Birds of a Feather: Grace and Carter bond over their status as single parents.
  • Double Standard:
    • Kia isn't surprised that there are only few visitors paying tribute at the Tamika Pratt vigil, knowing how female black victims often get sidelined in favor of others.
    • Olivia suffers from survivor's guilt because she was let go by the police for being the white D.A.'s daughter, whereas Tamika, who basically did the same thing as her, was shot because she was black.
  • Due to the Dead: Set on the backdrop of Tamika Pratt's vigil.
  • First Period Panic: Grace points out that Carter's daughter is experiencing her first period, but is too shy to confess it to her father.
  • Hidden Depths: Preach ends up tutoring Coop for her GED test.
  • Hikikomori: Jordan has been doing nothing but sit on the couch playing Injustice 2 since he was benched from the Eagles.
  • Odd Couple: Beyond differing opinions regarding South Crenshaw High, Grace and Carter unexpectedly become friends.
  • Police Brutality: Tamika Pratt was shot by the police because she was sleeping on the side of the road and was violently dragged by the officers out of her car for trying to call her cousin.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis: Jasmyn doesn't know who "Halle" is.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: The episode is inspired then-recent female black victims of police brutality in the United States, with figures such as Breonna Taylor being mentioned.
  • Shipper on Deck: Joy is one to Spencer and Olivia.
