The twelfth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
A fast-talking, travelling salesman named Wes Weasley sells Robotnik various hedgehog-catching gadgets, including the Darkenator, the Super-duper Gravity Stopper, and the De-Atomizer.
This episode provides examples of:
- Alliterative Name: Wes Weasley.
- Arms Dealer: Weasley can be seen as one, as he sells various weaponry and traps to Robotnik without any care what happens to them.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: This line from Robotnik:"Listen, Weasley, you are brash, arrogant, obnoxious, pushy, rude, and you dress funny. You're my kind of guy!"
- Berate and Switch: After Weasley introduces himself and offers his services to Robotnik, the latter then states everything he seemingly dislikes about the former, then says Weasley is his kind of guy.
- Burning Rubber: After Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into freezing themselves with the Freeze Banger, he runs around them to get the ice they're trapped in to melt. However, Sonic doesn't stop running around them, which cause them to melt along with the ice.
- Catchphrase: Weasley has two; "Hey palzy!" and "How are ya', how are ya', how are ya'?"
- The Door Slams You: Early in this episode, when Weasley comes to Robotnik's fortress, Grounder tries to answer the door, but Weasley opens it, crushing him.
- Didn't Think This Through: Scratch and Grounder hit Sonic with an anti-gravity beam, which prevents him from building up the necessary traction to run away. However, they hit Tails with the same beam, and without gravity weighing him down, Tails can pick up Sonic and carry him away. The heroes then trick Scratch into taking off his own self-gravity boots to try and catch them, which leads to the machine getting wrecked and Sonic and Tails escaping.
- Harmless Freezing: Robotnik buys the Freeze Banger to freeze Sonic. Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into using it on themselves, then offers to thaw them out - only to raise the temperature so high that they melt.
- Honest John's Dealership: Weasley is a walking, talking stereotype of one, fast-talking, tacky, intrusive, always smiling and wearing a garish yellow suit. Though in a bit of a subversion some of his merchandise works just fine in competent hands.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Sleazy salesman he may be, but Weasley makes a damn good point when he points out to Robotnik that his gadgets work perfectly, and they keep failing because Robotnik keeps passing them off to Scratch and Grounder rather than just use them himself.Robotnik: You have sold me contraption after contraption, and none of them work!
Weasley: Au contraire, mon omelette! It's your two stooges who don't work! My machines have performed as promised!
Robotnik: Hmmm... you have a point. - Latex Perfection: Sonic, who is normally a Paper-Thin Disguise master, does this near the end, wearing a rubber shark mask with his salesman outfit to pass himself off as salesman "Sid Sharkley" and defeat Robotnik and his henchmen by using Weasley's gadgets on them.
- Loophole Abuse: Wes Weasley offers Robotnik a money-back guarantee if his contraptions don't work. Unfortunately for Robotnik, Weasley keeps finding loopholes in the guarantee to avoid having to pay him back - the primary one being Scratch and Grounder's bungling wrecking the machines.
- Never My Fault: Every time Wes' gadgets fail, Robotnik blames Weasley, demanding refunds and accusing him of selling defective products. Weasely retorts that if anything, his gadgets have performed as promised - they're just in incompetent hands.
- No Celebrities Were Harmed, Michael Donovan, Weasley's voice actor has admitted that Weasley's voice is his "bad impersonation" of Phil Silvers.
- Nobody's That Dumb: This exchange:Sonic: Just turn off that Gravity Stopper ray, and we're yours!
(Scratch and Grounder laugh evilly, then stop.)
Grounder: What's so funny?
Scratch: We're dumb, but we're not that dumb!
Grounder: That's right! We're not that dumb! ...We're not?
Scratch: Of course not! If we shut off the Gravity Stopper machine, Sonic will fall back to the ground, and run away!
Grounder: Oh yeah, I knew that! - Popcorn on the Cob: Scratch accidentally clones Sonic with the De-Atomizer when he, Grounder, and Weasley hide out in a cornfield. The real Sonic makes a trail of fire, and each of his clones holds a cornstalk over the trail of fire. This results in a giant popcorn ball which chases Scratch and Grounder away.
- Shockingly Expensive Bill: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment, Tails watches a commercial for Robo Dude, a toy robot priced at $9.98, only to find out it actually costs $99.98 with all the bells and whistles thrown in.
- Shout-Out: This episode's title is a reference to the 1949 Arthur Miller stage play, Death of a Salesman.
- Snake Oil Salesman:
- Robotnik accuses Weasley of being one when the weapons he sells him fail to capture Sonic. However, Robotnik places Scratch and Grounder in charge of actually using the weapons, who fail to use them properly. If Robotnik actually used the weapons himself, he actually would've won.
- Played straight in this episode's "Sonic Says" segment. Weasley tries to sell Tails a "Robo Dude", an automated cleaning robot. The robot itself is $9.98. However, the attachments required to allow the Robo Dude to function are sold separately, and when purchased together with the Robo Dude itself, the total adds up to $99.98.
- Very False Advertising: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment, Weasley advertises Robo Dude, a robot said in his commercial to cost $9.98. Tails sees the commercial, and when he tries to buy one, Weasley adds various accessories not advertised in the commercial to Tails' purchase, which leads to Robo Dude costing $99.98.Sonic: If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably false.
- Visual Pun: Weasley is an anthropomorphic weasel.
- Wicked Weasel: Weasley sells Robotnik a series of weapons and contraptions to help him catch Sonic, and even though these contraptions worked, Scratch and Grounder were too stupid to use them properly.
