Go To

After getting a bad review for her lack of experience, Janine gets a new student sent to her by Melissa who proves to be quite the challenge. Jacob turns to Greg for help with how to deal with his kids roasting him.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Education: Janine and Melissa frequently leave their classrooms to talk with one another or with Ava without providing some adult supervision. All schools require an adult or faculty worker to watch over any classroom should the acting teacher need to leave for any reason.
  • The Bet: Barbara and Ava have a bet going on to see if Janine can handle Courtney. Even the janitor gets in on the action.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: The episode begins with Barbara reuniting with an old student who's delighted to see her again and happily informs her that he's in a much better place in life compared to how he was in kindergarten. After he leaves, Barbara confides in Janine that she had no idea who he was or what year he came from.
  • Cult: Played for Laughs. In her file, Courtney is described to have the making of a great cult leader.
  • Enfant Terrible: Courtney is regarded as Melissa's most challenging student and gives Janine a hell of a time when she transfers. From copying her, throwing paper wads on the ceiling, picking on her classmates to even teaching them swear words. Though it's explained that the reason she acts out is because she isn't getting a proper challenge from her current grade curriculum so Janine and Melissa decide to move her up a grade.
  • Epic Fail: Jacob's first, and only, attempt at roasting goes miserably as he tries to use a student's uniform as his basis which lacks originality, quickness, delivery and sting.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Behind Courtney's adorable face lies a mischievous and bored little demon who seeks stimulation through improper actions.
  • Friendship Moment: Jacob manages to win Greg just enough so that they're on friendlier terms with each other. They even share a thumbs-up sign and Greg feels comfortable enough to roast him.
  • Foreshadowing: After being asked to leave her class to meet Ava in her office, Janine reminds her that alot can happen in a class in less than five minutes. So when she willingly leaves to brag to Melissa, Courtney is shown to have taught a new swear word to the kids.
  • Grade Skipper: The teachers agree to move Courtney to the third grade in the hopes that the harder material will be enough to keep her occupied and challenged.
  • I Heard That: Ava summons Janine via speaker to meet with her in her office while in the middle of class. Janine questions if she should drop everything to go just because Ava said so only for the principal to answer that she expects her to come asap.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After one boy accuses Courtney of calling him "stupid", she defends herself saying that she called him "stupendous" only to end with "you idiot".
  • Insult Comic: Jacob's class have begun roasting him on a daily basis by picking apart his fashion choices. In the end, Jacob is able to channel their roasting abilities into more productive means. (Making a game where they roast a historical figure while one student having to deduce who the figure is through their insults).
  • The Leader: Courtney possesses all the qualities of a charismatic leader that any child would be willing to follow. Too bad for the teachers that she prefers to use her power for evil by inspiring the kids with harmful behaviors.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Janine gets so upset over her bad score that she takes her frustrations out on Melissa by calling her a bad teacher on the spot.
  • Stop Copying Me: Courtney's first act of psychological warfare is to copy everything Janine does.
  • Take a Third Option: Rather then deal with Courtney's tyranny or send her back to Ms. Schemmenti in defeat, Janine insists on moving her to the third grade on the grounds of having it be an opportunity for the girl to expand her skills.
