People wanted ANOTHER season of misery?

The Baudelaires begin their stint at Prufrock Prep School, meeting new friends and new enemies alike.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Nero's Anti-Olaf System, which in the books is just a picture of Olaf. Here, it's an Advanced Computer System which scans people to determine whether or not they're Olaf, and actually does deter him from entering. Briefly.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Nero shows the Baudelaires a pamphlet about the wonders of Prufrock's dormitories, which sound nicer than anywhere they've ever seen... then tells them that, since they're orphans, they get to live in the orphan shack.
    • Olaf advances through the Prufrock school bus, where Larry is cowering in the back. He declares he's found something... and angrily admonishes the troupe for missing two perfectly good pom-poms!
  • Boarding School of Horrors: Prufrock Preparatory School. In case the fact their motto is Memento Mori (remember you will die, in Latin) and the depressing architecture wasn't a hint as to the horror that awaits within, inside the students are all jerkasses, save the Quagmires, a brat named Carmelita runs the roost, and the Vice Principal is a tyrant who forces everyone to attend his violin recitals, while draining the budget from everywhere else. And if you're an orphan, you have to live in a shack filled with crabs and fungus (not deadly fungus, but definitely disgusting).
  • Chekhov's Gun: Carmelita's very conspicuous jewelled brooch, which disappears after her conversation with Olaf.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Nathan Fillion makes a vocal cameo as Jacques Snicket when Jacquelyn calls him to rescue Larry.
  • Dreadful Musician: Vice Principal Nero is convinced that he is a prodigious violin player, but all he does is play the violin out of tune.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Carmelita calls the Baudelaires "cakesniffers" for no reason, leads them on a tour while still insulting them, then reveals that by doing so she's made them late for their meeting with Nero. And she demands payment anyway.
  • For the Evulz: Carmelita kicks Larry Your-Waiter for no reason, and during Snicket's elaboration of "making mountains out of molehills", randomly shoves another Prufrocker over just because she hates his face.
  • Get a Room!: Sunny says this, via baby-speak, to Violet and Duncan when they stare at each other a little too long after introducing themselves.
  • Jerk Jock: What's seen of the Prufrock sports team seems to be made of them.
  • Waxing Lyrical:
Larry: Just tell me what you want, what you really really want.
Carmelita: Oh, I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The Prufrock Prepatory sports team and gym coach are waylaid by Count Olaf, and never seen or heard from again. The troupe's dialogue indicates they were left alive, which raises even more questions as to where they went.
