Trust their reaction, there is no joy in watching this show.

Olaf's plan to sneak the Baudelaires away to Peru in the wake of Uncle Monty's death is interrupted by the timely arrival of Mr. Poe, who is nevertheless handily fooled by the various disguises the troupe pulls to fake the cause of Monty's death (allegedly a snakebite via the Incredibly Deadly Viper, which has gone missing). The siblings are able to disprove this by showing that the snake wouldn't hurt a fly (or Sunny) and Violet procuring evidence from Stephano's suitcase. The troupe escapes after being scared off by the screeching iguana and Olaf disappears into the labyrinth, having taken Klaus's spyglass from him. Jacquelyn, having disguised herself as the woman at the center of the maze, appears to the Baudelaires and directs them to find their Aunt Josephine. Jacquelyn tracks Olaf down on the Prospero, but he manages to outsmart her and escape.

Meanwhile, Mother and Father, now in a Peruvian bar, attempt to call Uncle Monty's phone to no avail, the scene implying that they're going to fight their way out of the establishment.

Tropes:

  • Cuckoo Clock Gag: This episode features a screeching iguana clock owned by Uncle Monty, which screeches every hour. It causes Stephano (Count Olaf in disguise) to become comically startled in the scene where the clock is first introduced.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: "Stephano" claims Monty died due to an accidental snakebite by the Incredibly Deadly Viper. Not a murder, nope.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: Jacquelyn poses as one for most of the episode in order to keep an eye on the Baudelaires. She's so convincing that even the audience is fooled.
  • Not Me This Time: Non-human example. When the troupe is cowering, Olaf (assuming they're spooked because of a roar) snaps at them that it is most likely the iguana clock, only for the trope to reveal one of the reptiles glaring angrily at Olaf.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Olaf jumps from his cabin on the S.S. Prospero to the waters below.
