Jaune finds himself struggling in class and when he decides he'd rather go it alone than accept help, Shadow steps in to lend a hand in his own way.

Tropes for this chapter

  • Adaptational Explanation: Canon never confirmed if Ozpin knew Jaune faked his way into Beacon. Here, he admits to Shadow that he had Jaune pegged early on, but let it slide to see if he could prove his worth.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: Shadow pulls one on his fight with Jaune. It's justified a bit in that Shadow does have the strength to handle a catch and the speed to pull it off. Doesn't explain how he didn't get his hands sliced.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: Sonic does this to CRDL when they were picking on Velvet, resulting with the bullies' pants hanging from a nearby lamppost.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Shadow challenges Jaune to a fight to get the latter to realize how badly he needs help. It's the untrained Jaune of Volume 1 against a hedgehog who's fought robot armies, an alien invasion, and repeatedly punched a god in the face. Shadow wins without even trying.
  • Mythology Gag: When encouraging Jaune to stand up to Cardin, Knuckles suggests going for the groin as a weak point, which was a strategy he suggested at the climax of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022).
  • There Was a Door: Ozpin lampshades the inability of the hedgehogs to use the door when visiting his office when Shadow pops in the window.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Shadow calls out Jaune and Ozpin to a lesser degree about the whole incident given the dangerous nature of the profession.
