“Interior Chinatown” may be primarily focused on the negative stereotypes of Asian-Americans in media, but this little segment, however unintentional, also does a good job of showing how Black women are erased in media. We have neither male nor white privilege to hold us up despite our marginalized status, and so, being “unable” to appeal to anybody(read: the dominant white male culture) we get left in the dark.
I’m so used to seeing this dichotomy of “white woman, Black man” that pretends to combat sexism or the Token Trio of “white man, Black man, white woman” that too pretends to be diverse and inclusive(while also hinging on “Black and White”) and yet it’s so disappointing all the same.
