Playing With / Villains Never Lie

Go To

Basic Trope: Good guys wrongly trust the villain (at least partially).

  • Straight: Dr Evil pretends Hiro's mentor is actually evil. Dr Evil is a Card-Carrying Villain, he doesn't lie about being villain, so Hiro wonders whether there is some truth in his story.
  • Exaggerated: Dr Evil tells the Hiro about his mentor's crimes. Despite knowing that Dr Evil always lies, and having himself witnessing these events not taking place this way, Hiro is seriously shaken.
  • Downplayed: Dr Evil's lies work because he had an elaborate, 95% true story. Additionally, Hiro's mentor actually hid his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Justified: Hiro knows Dr Evil is Lawful Evil and supposedly took a truth oath.
  • Inverted: Dr Evil is completely honest when telling Hiro that his allies are evil too. But Hiro doesn't listen, or silences him because he's the villain.
  • Subverted: "Yes, my mentor told me about all the crimes he committed and that's why he fights so hard for good causes now. He also told me you're the world's first liar by omission."
  • Double Subverted: but actually, Hiro is secretly shaken by doubts about his mentor.
  • Parodied: Dr Evil just says "your mentor is the real villain" and Hiro switches side without any proof. Mentor replies "no, he is" and Hiro resumes fighting Dr Evil.
  • Averted: Dr Evil spouts his manipulative lies. But Hiro doesn't listen, or silences him because he's the villain.
  • Lampshaded: "Yeah, of course Hiro, this guy killed entire cities, and runs propaganda channels, but he wouldn't lie to you."
  • Deconstructed: Due to his doubts about Dr Evil's lies, Hiro wasn't able to stop him this time, leading to many deaths which could have been avoided.
  • Reconstructed: Seeking the truth out of Dr Evil's half-truths helped Hiro grow past his Black-and-White Morality.
