Basic Trope: A character is obviously named for a pop culture figure, which characterizes their parents as weird fans of it.

  • Straight: Mary's full name is Mary Poppins Johnson, because her parents were big fans of Julie Andrews and loved the movie.
  • Exaggerated: Everybody in the work is named for a classic literary character. Mary's siblings are Peter Pan and Anna Karenina Johnson, her best friend is Nancy Drew Richards, and her boyfriend is David Copperfield Smith.
  • Downplayed: The mother gives birth to twin girls, and rather than subject one of them to being named "Mary Poppins", they choose to name them "Mary" and "Poppy".
  • Justified: Naming kids after fiction is customary in the group Mary's parents belong to.
  • Inverted: Naming kids after fiction is the norm in society. Kyle is unusual for not being named for anybody in particular.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: Mary's mother expresses a desire to name her "Mary Poppins", but her father vetoes it, saying that it would be a silly name for a girl..."Anna Karenina" would be much better.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody in the work is named for a fictional character.
  • Enforced: The editor wants Mary's name to stick out to the reader, so he suggests giving her a full name that's an obvious reference.
  • Lampshaded: "Your name is Mary Poppins? Can you fly with an umbrella?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Mary's mother expresses a desire to name her "Mary Poppins", but her father vetoes it, saying that kids in movies who are named after fictional characters are bullied for it.
    • The clerk in charge of filing baby names for the county sees the birth certificate that reads "Megatron Griffin"note , assumes that it's obviously some kind of prank, and files the obvious "Megan" instead.

  • Conversed: ???
