Playing With / Tomboy with a Girly Streak

Go To

Basic Trope: A tomboyish girl/woman with some feminine traits.

  • Straight:
    • Alice is a tomboyish Action Girl, but actually cooks and wears dresses.
    • Alice has a tomboyish physical appearance, but a girly personality, and her interests are a mixture of tomboyish and girly interests.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is a straight up Ladette, yet also genuinely enjoys many stereotypical feminine traits, like cute things and motherhood.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice is more tomboyish than other girls, though is recognizably feminine.
    • Alice is certainly tomboyish, though some of her hobbies and preferences may seem feminine, such as being a professional chef or genuinely liking pink on its own merits.
    • Alice is a straight up tomboy who is only occasionally feminine.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is a complex tomboy, who likes a variety of different things.
    • Alice grew up in a society where everyone is tough regardless of gender and/or the gender roles are only somewhat enforced.
    • Alice's Girly Girl traits are leftover from her childhood personality.
    • Alice has undergone a sort of Girliness Upgrade.
  • Inverted:
  • Gender Inverted:
  • Subverted: Alice at first seems like she enjoys cooking and dresses, but is actually just acting that way.
  • Double Subverted: ... Yet the society she belongs to has different standards, so she's still considered a girlish tomboy because of her acting chops.
  • Parodied: Alice is the Goddess of Alcohol and War, easily more manly than the masculine gods. Yet, the moment anyone asks her on a date, she bursts into squees and gets carried away with thoughts of marriage and children.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Alice is willing to indulge in more girly behavior, and yet other times she fully exerts her tomboy nature.
  • Averted: Alice is a straight-up Tomboy with few to no feminine features.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need Alice to be approachable by both the female and male demographic, so let's have her be a girly tomboy!"
    • "We need this tomboy character to be attracted by girls, so let's add her soft girlish side to make them can relate to!"
  • Lampshaded: "I'm half expecting you to claim the dolls are just a ruse, but I have seen your bedroom..."
  • Invoked: Alice deliberately picks up girly traits to avoid intimidating young girls and convince them girly traits aren't "bad".
  • Exploited: Events are set up so Alice would engage in her girly traits, putting off her male and pure-tomboy friends.
  • Defied: Alice expressly refuses to have a mix of tomboyish and girly traits, finding it much easier to adhere to just one set.
  • Discussed: "Did you know that Alice knits? It's so weird." "Why d'you say that? She can like a couple girly things too if she feels like it."
  • Conversed: "Why am I not surprised that the Tomboy character also likes cuddly stuffed animals?"
  • Implied:
    • Alice is unmistakably a tomboy, yet she always gets a bit distracted noticing more feminine women.
    • In Alice's drawer, underneath various jeans and jackets, lies a dress.
  • Deconstructed: Men don't take Alice very seriously, having fully recognized her girly traits and thinking she wouldn't be able to completely focus on anything more typically masculine, or they think she is just "confused". Regular girls don't take her seriously either, feeling that they despite her feminine interests there's nothing they can really identify with, since Alice is still primarily boyish.
  • Reconstructed: Alice doesn't hide her girly traits at all, but also makes it clear she really is a tomboy once all is said & done. Thus just because she has some girly traits doesn't actually mean she considers herself feminine.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice's girly traits are rather random & disconnected, thus resulting in hilariously unpredictable behavior. So while she may be indifferent to ponies, the moment dolls get brought up she can't control her excitement & so on.
  • Played For Drama: Alice's girly traits cause people to assume she's more feminine than she really is, resulting in her being left out of more "masculine" actions and events she would have genuinely enjoyed.
