Basic Trope: Someone feels their more successful sibling overshadows them.
- Straight: Flash Young, the nationally famous heavyweight boxing champion of the world (and also octuple division champion), feels that his older sister, Hillary Young, is constantly overshadowing him as she's pretty much the head of a globally known multimedia conglomerate that allows the two to live an extremely lavish lifestyle (though Flash prefers to live in his dingy old gym with his friends).
- Exaggerated: Flash can be so famous that the whole world knows his name, and yet Hillary still manages to overshadow him. It doesn't help that Hillary is known throughout every feasible corner of the omniverse.
- Downplayed:
- While Flash focuses on the fame he has now, he does occasionally compare it to Hillary's, which is just a little bit more well known than Flash's.
- Flash is pretty famous, but all he wants is the approval of Hillary.
- Justified:
- Hillary is just that more famous than Flash, which feeds into his Inferiority Superiority Complex.
- Flash is comically immature, which is why people prefer Hillary over him. As such, he tends to feel a little left out and is rather vocal of it, while also whining about being considered idiotic and immature.
- Inverted: Hillary genuinely feels that her younger brother Flash (no matter how annoying he may be Depending on the Writer) is lesser than her, and she doesn't like it not one bit. So she goes out of her way to make his name as known as hers, and Depending on the Writer, he may or may not like the newfound fame. Likewise, there may be those who think he's piggybacking off his own sister's success.
- Subverted: While it's assumed that the lesser known Flash would probably resent his older sister's greatness, he's actually revealed to be totally cool about it.
- Double Subverted: It's just that he's using his totally cool exterior to hide his furious, enraged resentment about his inferiority because of her.
- Parodied: Flash is practically unknown by comparison to his sister; In fact, in the rare event he even gets mentioned, it's usually as more of a putdown, an indirect "The Reason You Suck" Speech. And in any fight debates, it's practically unanimous that Hillary gives Flash a big old Curbstomp Battle.
- Zig-Zagged: The fame of Flash and Hillary tend to fluctuate, and whoever's the more successful sibling (and who's the one jealous of the other's success) is Depending on the Writer.
- Averted:
- Flash doesn't feel overshadowed.
- Flash isn't overshadowed.
- Flash and Hillary are equally famous.
- Enforced: To make Flash a Jerkass Woobie, considering he's a sulking brute who's pretty loutish himself.
- Lampshaded:
- "Still not as famous as your sister, eh?"
- "I can't believe they're all pourin' their support an' affection towards HER! Like, HELLO!? I'm right fuckin' here!"
- "Brother? Oh, HIM? Yeah, I don't really talk about him much..."
- Invoked: Hillary, being the Big Sister Bully she is, intentionally makes herself look like a charitous, mature woman, while subtly making Flash look more and more like a brutish, loutish, unrespectable, Psychopathic Manchild who bashes people's heads in For the Lulz.
- Exploited: Paul Dyson notices Flash's resentment of his sister, and promises that his name will be better known than hers... At the lowly cost of his SOUL.
- Defied:
- Flash refuses to consider himself as lesser than Hillary, as the two are in different industries altogether.
- Hillary refuses to have Flash be considered a lesser person, and while she does make him well known, it's not so overt that it looks like he's piggybacking off her success.
- Discussed: "Man, don't you think that Flash is... A little resentful of Hillary's success?" "I know who Hillary is, but who's this Flash guy you're talking about?"
- Conversed: "Awww, poor Flash. Can't ever get out of his sister's shadow." "Considering how much of a complete Jerkass Flash tends to be, he probably deserves it."
- Implied:
- While Hillary is the well known star of the work, more often than not, you tend to see a frowning face with a huge pompadour behind her and you have no idea who that is. And according to the wiki, the face is actually Hillary's younger brother Flash.
- Flash, the main protagonist, is always grumbling about his sister, but he never expands on why he's even grumbling about her. Meanwhile, she's part of a MegaCorp.
- Deconstructed: Flash decides to get even (or higher) with Hillary, and works hard enough to become even more successful than her. Now the roles are switched.
- Reconstructed: That is, until Flash's Role-Ending Misdemeanor is revealed; Now he's perpetually known as the guy who had a Role-Ending Misdemeanor.
- Played for Laughs: Flash is jealous of Hillary's success for something comically trivial.
- Played for Drama: Flash is jealous of Hillary's success to the point where he's Driven to Suicide. And when Hillary finds out, distraught wouldn't even begin to describe her feelings...
- Played for Horror: Flash is jealous of Hillary's success and proceeds to kill her for it.
