Basic Trope: Sound in space.

  • Straight: Spaceships make noise in space.
  • Exaggerated:
    • A starship can be stealthy by "running silent" and is given away by a crewman dropping a tool on his foot and letting loose a Cluster F-Bomb.
    • Bob screams loudly in frustration after stubbing his toe and every ship in the sector hears it.
  • Downplayed: Objects in space make very muffled sounds.
  • Justified:
    • Bob's spaceship uses auralization technology to generate sounds for his benefit.
    • The sound we hear from Bob's spaceship is actually from within his spaceship, played for our benefit during exterior shots. Bob just has a very noisy clunker of a ship.
    • The nebula being traversed is dense enough for sound propagation.
  • Inverted:
    • Spaceships don't even make noise in the atmosphere of planets.
    • There is no sound in space because sound doesn't exist at all.
  • Subverted: Bob's sits in his spaceship listening to the roar of rocket engines. Then he turns off a movie he was watching and enjoys the silence.
  • Double Subverted: ... and then a star he's passing by explodes, nearly deafening him.
  • Parodied:
    • Sounds in space are considerably louder, because there isn't any air to get in the way.
    • The Interstellar Employment Bureau would like to remind all employees operating in space to wear adequate hearing protection during extra vehicular operation. Have a safe and friendly day!
    • Space has constant background music blaring over it.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • We hear spaceships make noises occasionally for dramatic effect, but it's made ambiguous as to whether we are hearing the noise in space or if it's from some other source, such as the inside of the ship or part of the music track. Certain moments bend credibility of this theory but it's largely overlooked.
  • Averted: Spaceships don't make noise as long as they're in space.
  • Enforced: The network execs think Reality Is Unrealistic or that the show isn't as interesting with no sound.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, I thought there wasn't any sound in space!"
  • Invoked: Bob launches a missile at an enemy warship and covers his ears.
    • As humans rely on sounds to understand their environments, information gathered by a sensor suite is communicated to crew, pilots and/or passengers through In-Universe Stock Sound Effects to help them achieve better situational awareness.
  • Defied: During exceptionally stressful maneuvers during a space battle, Bob will disengage the auralization technology on his ship to calm his nerves.
  • Exploited: A warship is armed with sonic weapons instead of the usual suspects.
  • Discussed:
"My ears are still ringing from when that star exploded!"
    "What?"
  • Conversed: "You know things in space don't really make noise like they do on Star Trek, right?"
