Basic Trope: A character opposes a couple being together.

  • Straight: Alice's father disapproves of her being with her boyfriend Bob, so he forbids her from seeing him.
  • Exaggerated: If Bob so much as gets within a foot of Alice, her father threatens him with a shotgun.
  • Downplayed: Alice's father doesn't forbid her from seeing Bob, but he's a little wary of him and tells Alice to be careful.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is a repeat delinquent, so her father is reasonably distrusting of him.
    • Alice's father is a Boyfriend-Blocking Dad.
    • Alice's father has arranged for her to marry someone else.
    • There is a 98% chance that Bob is his son by mistress.
  • Inverted: Alice's father enthusiastically supports Alice/Bob.
  • Subverted: Alice's father disapproves of her seeing Bob at first, but warms up to him later on.
  • Double Subverted: When Alice’s mother meets Bob, however, she immediately disapproves of their relationship.
  • Parodied: Whenever Alice gets within a mile of Bob, her father grounds her for 80 years.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice’s father has back-and-forth feelings on Bob; sometimes he loves him like a son, sometimes not.
  • Averted: Alice's father approves of her relationship with Bob and leaves them be.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Wow Alice, your dad really doesn't like me being with you."
  • Invoked: Bob intentionally does something bad to make Alice’s father hate him.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice's father hides his feelings about Bob, since Alice is a grown woman and she can date whoever she wants.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Alice's father doesn't say anything out loud about Alice and Bob's relationship, but he shoots a disapproving glare in Bob's direction every time he comes to visit.
  • Deconstructed: Because her father is constantly trying to ruin her relationship with Bob, it puts a great strain on Alice's relationship with her father to the point that she starts to resent him. Eventually Alice confronts her father about it and they end up in a shouting match, they stop being on speaking terms afterwards.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice's father repeatedly tries to convince her to break up with Bob, but she always refuses and he responds with a simple "darn it" and leaves the room.
  • Played For Drama: Alice's father disapproves of Alice being with Bob so much, he has Bob arranged to be killed.
