Basic Trope: A character sniffs someone they're attracted to or something with their scent.

  • Straight:
    • Alice finds Bob's shirt and sniffs it.
    • Alice sniffs Bob's neck when passing by him.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice sniffs Bob's clothes or body every time she has the chance.
    • Alice has a collection of stuff with Bob's scent.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice gives a quick sniff during a hug or after a kiss, nothing long or invasive enough to be uncomfortable.
    • Sexy Shirt Switch
  • Justified: Alice and Bob are dating and Alice finds his smell alluring.
  • Inverted: Alice uses all her senses but that of smell to signal her attraction to Bob.
  • Subverted: Alice picks up a piece of clothing that IS clearly Bob's and pauses staring at it, then takes it to the laundry room, mumbling about his slack personal hygiene.
  • Double Subverted: ... then gives it a sniff before tossing in the laundry basket.
  • Parodied: Alice picks up a piece of Bob's clothes and burst into tears when she realises it's new/washed.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Alice sniffs Bob or his clothes only at every other available opportunity.
    • Alice sniffs Bob's clothes to determine just what he encountered most recently.
  • Averted: No character, whether single or dating, sniffs someone's clothes or body.
  • Enforced: It's a way of portraying sexual interest without outrage from Moral Guardians.
  • Lampshaded: "Why did you sniff someone's clothes like that? So creepy."
  • Invoked:
    • Alice hears or reads that there's something special in a partner's smell and wants to try for herself.
    • Bob gives an old shirt to Alice just before their relationship becomes long-distance.
  • Exploited: Charlie finds out about Alice's clothes sniffing habbit and blackmails her with it.
  • Defied: Bob doesn't let clothing lying around nor let's people get too close when greeting.
  • Discussed: "Why would someone sniff clothes from their crush? That can't be healthy."
  • Conversed: "Without Smell-O-Vision, we can't even know how it is that Bob smells so great to Alice."
  • Implied:
    • Alice does most of the laundry and sometimes is caught staring at Bob's clothes.
    • Alice presses her face on Bob's skin when they hug but there are no sound effects to confirm.
  • Deconstructed: ???
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: Alice finds and sniffs Bob's shirt. In more and more exaggerated and with dramatic posing each time it looks like she's done.
  • Played for Drama:
    • Bob is disgusted when he finds out Alice sniffs his clothes and views it as creepy, putting a hard strain in an otherwise good relationship.
    • The disgust is mostly because they're not dating and doing such things shows Bob that Alice is unhealthily obsessed.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is a Stalker with a Crush, so stealing and sniffing on clothes is another way of signaling how unhinged she is.
