Basic Trope: A parent is completely unaware of a major aspect of their children's lives.

  • Straight: Bob, Alice's son, is a Super Hero. Alice is unaware of this, despite the hints.
  • Exaggerated: Bob doesn't really try to hide his status as a Super Hero, but Alice is still completely oblivious to this.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice suspects that something is up with Bob, but she hasn't confirmed anything yet.
    • Alice knows that Bob has a double-life, but she doesn't know the full extent of it.
  • Justified: Alice is a single mother who works a lot, and therefore isn't around Bob a lot to question anything.
  • Inverted: Alice, Bob's mom, is a Super Hero. Bob is unaware of this, despite the hints.
  • Subverted: Alice seems to be unaware of Bob being a Super Hero, but in reality, she has known since the beginning and just doesn't bring it up because it will be awkward.
  • Double Subverted: ..at least, that what she thinks. Bob knows that she thinks she's a Super Hero, and uses that as a cover for his true secret - being a Super Villain.
  • Parodied: Nothing raises red-flags for Alice. That super suit in the back of his closet? A neat Halloween costume of his idol. Coming home covered in alien guts? Just a little dirt, that's all. That laser gun he left laying on his desk? A cool prop for drama class.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice is a Secret-Keeper for Bob, but his father still has no idea.
  • Averted: Alice knows all about Bob's heroics, and she's surprisingly okay with it.
  • Enforced: "I want Bob to go on grandiose adventures without having to deal with his parents." "Then just make his parents completely oblivious to his antics. Problem solved!"
  • Lampshaded: "Okay, how does she still not know the truth about me?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Bob knows that his mom is oblivious and uses it for mundane stuff like sneaking out to go to a friend's place.
  • Defied: As soon as Bob gains his powers, his mom instantly recognizes that something has changed and forces him to come clean.
  • Discussed: "Don't worry about me, I can do anything short of taking my mask off in front of my mom and she wouldn't realize anything."
  • Conversed: "I wonder why the parents of Super Heroes never suspect anything about their kids."
  • Played for Drama: Bob is an adult, has his own place and suffers from depression. Despite meeting his parents often, they don't know about his loneliness because he's actively covering it up and pretending nothing is wrong, as he believes they would think less of him if they knew.
  • Implied: Bob's parents exist off-screen, and some of the shenanigans he gets up to on-screen should logically set off alarm bells for them. Despite this, nothing ever comes of it.
