Basic Trope: A species where the individuals can only be of a certain gender.
- Straight: The Tropids are always born as males.
- Exaggerated: Literally every creature on the planet is male, not just the Tropids.
- Downplayed:
- Female Tropids exist, but are incredibly rare.
- Male and female Tropids exist in equal numbers, but both sexes look identical and are only ever referred to with masculine pronouns.
- There is only one female tropid.
- Justified:
- Tropids reproduce homosexually or asexually, so females are not needed, or are hermaphrodite.
- Another creature committed Gendercide and killed all of the female Tropids.
- Inverted: Every member of the Tropids are their own unique gender, and two may not be of the same gender.
- Subverted:
- A female Tropid is born, and she breeds to create more female Tropids.
- While they end up looking male, one of the Tropids pull a Samus Is a Girl and reveals herself to be female.
- Tropids are all male. Tropezelles are all female. It takes three seasons before someone points out that Tropids and Tropezelles are actually a single species with Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism.
- Tropids while they look all male actually have both sexes - they just have a complete lack of external sexual dimorphism and even Tropids can only tell which is which via pheromones or medical testing.
- Double Subverted:
- ...Then a Smeerp comes by and eats all of the females, making the entire process a huge waste of time.
- ...Then she later reveals that she was male all along, and he only said he was a girl because he wanted special attention.
- Female Trophids are a recent creation made by the males through cloning. Out of jealousy of the humans and their women, because they wanted what we have.
- Parodied:
- All Tropids are male, even the ones who look like females. Bob finds this out the hard way.
- All Tropids are male! We do not label ourselves based upon what reproductive organs we have!
- Zig-Zagged:
- Trophids are all male, but they mate with their female counterpart race, the Tropezelles.
- There are multiple species of Trophid, and some are all male, some are all female, while others have both sexes.
- Enforced: Terror of the Tropids is heavily focused on selling action figures. Female Tropids just don't have the same marketability with its target demographic, and implying that they exist just raises too many questions, so Word of God declares them a one-gender race.
- Lampshaded: "So wait, female Tropids don't exist? Then how do they reproduce?"
- Averted: Male and female Tropids exist amongst each other.
- Invoked: A scientist invents a device to turn all females into males to inoculate its population against a female-specific virus as well as control population growth.
- Exploited: A villain designs a device that only kills males, because she Does Not Like Men, and finds out that she can easily use it to make Tropids extinct.
- Defied:
- Tropids have a function in their body to turn them into females when they find out only male inhabit the area, and vice versa.
- "Just because we've only seen male tropids doesn't mean there are no females."
- Discussed: "The Tropids are well known for being Always Male. Nobody has reported the existence of a female one as of now."
- Conversed: "I'm pretty sure they're going to die off soon. They can't pull off sexual intercourse without a female."
- Deconstructed: Since Tropids are only male, they can't pull off the mating process with each other. Thus, the Tropids eventually go extinct.
- Reconstructed:
- Tropids reproduce asexually, removing the need for the other gender.
- Tropids reproduce homosexually and can become a Mister Seahorse, removing the need for the other gender.
- Implied: When a traveler visits a Tropid colony, the only ones he saw are male. He has even visited some homes.
