Basic Trope: A marriage that's dysfunctional and unhappy, yet the two remain together.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are a married couple who don't get along and are unhappy with each other, yet they are still married.
  • Exaggerated: Alice and Bob have been married for 30 years and they really HATE each other so much that they desperately want to kill each other.
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob bicker constantly, but deep down they truly care for each other.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Alice and Bob are a blissful and harmonious couple but for some reason never got married.
  • Subverted: It turns out that Alice and Bob do love each other and are happy together when no one is looking.
  • Double Subverted: It also turns out that they hate each other when they're alone together.
  • Parodied: A television commercial plays where a man tells the audience that marriage is a trap and demonstrates it by showing Alice and Bob bickering with each other despite being labeled as a married couple.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice and Bob's marriage vary from bitter to sweet depending on the episode.
  • Averted: Alice and Bob's marriage is relatively normal.
  • Enforced: "Marriage isn't all that's cracked to be. Let's make Alice and Bob miserable together."
  • Lampshaded: "Why are you guys still married?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Various men and women have affairs with Alice and Bob, knowing that both are itching to cheat but there is no potential to be homewreckers.

    • Alice and Bob learn to be happy together in spite of their differences.
    • Realising just how dysfunctional they are together, Alice and Bob divorce, not wanting to be in an unhappy marriage any longer.
