Trope: A wife sees lipstick on her husband's clothes, and thinks it's from an affair.

  • Straight: Alice finds a lipstick mark on one of Bob's, her husband, shirts, and she does not remember him wearing the last time they made love. Is Bob cheating on her.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob's shirt has so many lipstick marks, Alice thinks it's just a novelty pattern made for the shirt.
    • Bob tries to burn the t-shirt in question, only for Alice to find the burnt shirt with the mark still intact.
  • Downplayed: Alice smells a whiff of unfamiliar perfume, but it could have been from a few days ago when she was trying new scents from the Avon lady.
  • Justified: The story takes place before easier divorce laws, and Alice and Bob realize one would be better for them than more years unhappily together. So they set up the lipstick as a reason.
  • Inverted: Suzy, The Mistress, finds Alice's lipstick on Bob's shirt. She was only only willing to sleep with him because he assured her that they had a Sexless Marriage.
  • Subverted: Alice sees the lipstick on Bob's collar, and then just reminds herself to be careful when they make out.
  • Double Subverted: Wait a second. That's not a color she wears!
  • Parodied:
    • My god, the shirt was cheating on Bob! It said he was the only guy it would want wearing him, and it's gone and been on Carl! And Elaine's lipstick is the proof!
    • Alice marches into the room, holding Bob's lipstick-marked shirt, enraged. Why can't he be more careful when making out with Suzy? Those lipstick stains are impossible to get out!
  • Zig Zagged: Bob finds lipstick on Alice's bra. This upsets Bob, because that's the same lipstick color Suzy wears. She's been two-timing them both! And after she was adamant that she didn't like threesomes!
  • Averted: Alice just finds dust on Bob's shirt, the kind he normally gets at his work.
  • Enforced: The producer doesn't think the story should not have Bob get caught cheating.
  • Lampshaded: "I know Bob is unfaithful, but I never got my lipstick to look like that when we made out!"
  • Invoked: Suzy finds Bob is a bad husband, and wouldn't even be good for her, so she deliberately kisses his shirt so Alice will find out.
  • Exploited:
    • Yes! Now Alice can sleep with that hot gardener, and Bob will just look like a hypocrite if he complains!
    • She has leverage in getting Bob to finally buy her those diamond earrings and mink wrap she wanted. Hey, all the other ladies at the country club have unfaithful husbands, but still dress better.
  • Defied:
    • Bob brings portable stain removers on his trysts, and carefully inspects his clothes on the way home.
    • Suzy wears lipstick that doesn't smear.
  • Discussed: "And you didn't even respect me enough to try to hide this carefully, Bob!"
  • Conversed: "I wonder what would be the modern equivalent today. Would social media messages be the new thing?"
  • Implied: Alice does her laundry, and we don't see Bob's shirt up close, but Alice signs and drops the shirt on the floor, before going to confront Bob.
  • Played For Laughs: This is a hentai, and the tentacle monster G'gruluck found an unfamiliar sucker mark on Alice's shirt.
    • Alice finds the mark on Bob's shirt, but it's all shown through a Bollywood style musical number.
  • Played For Horror: Alice knows what to do. She rolls the shirt up, and uses it to strangle Bob.
  • Untwisted: Suzy, The Mistress, finds Alice's lipstick on Bob's shirt, she never knew he was married.
