Basic Trope: A character gets so caught up in the moral nuances they're utterly unable to see unambiguous Right or Wrong.
- Straight: Bob upholds a grey and gray worldview, and is mentally unstable.
- Exaggerated: No matter how unambiguously right or wrong an action and its motivation may be, Bob still believes that good things are done with bad intentions and vice versa.
- Downplayed:
- Bob has a mental disorder and doesn't understand that it's not always the case that Both Sides Have a Point.
- Bob is often correct about the moral nuances of the world, but he fails to acknowledge the unambiguously good and evil factions that do exist.
- Justified: Bob had gone through a grey and gray adventure that made him believe that it's never black and white, even when it sometimes is.
- Inverted: Bob claims that everything is black and white, even though there's explicitly only grey actions and motivations throughout the story. He's labelled as insane.
- Subverted: Bob is actually correct in his assertions; morality really is that ambiguous.
- Double Subverted: Until Emperor Evulz and Troperia show up; Two very decisively black and white (respectively) characters.
- Parodied: One side of the conflict wants any and all tensions quelled and for everyone to live in harmony. The other side wants to bring about a Class Z-4 apocalypse for no good reason at all. Bob still believes that Both Sides Have a Point.
- Zig-Zagged: Bob initially believes that Grey-and-Gray Morality is the rule of the land, but, later on in the story, he Took a Level in Idealism and now believes that morality is white-and-grey, or he Took a Level in Cynic and believes that morality is black-and-grey.
- Averted: Bob is actually quite sane.
- Enforced: There's already Black-and-White Insanity, so they might as well add Grey-and-Gray Insanity here. Plus, it functions as a perfectly good strawman for those that think that being grey all the time is ideal and use the Golden Mean Fallacy and ride it to the banks.
- Lampshaded: "Sure, Bob is trying to be realistic; Props for that. However, he has to understand that not everything is grey and gray, for there are those who are clear cut in one way or the other."
- Invoked: Emperor Evulz makes a phony "Not So Different" Remark to make Bob think that Both Sides Have a Point when the Emperor is genuinely evil.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: ???
- Discussed: "What the actual fuck is Bob even talking about? There are clearly people who act and have motivations that are clearly black and white. Sure, there may be some morally grey people here and there, but it's some people, not the whole goddamn planet!"
- Conversed: ???
Back to the main page which is definitely a nuanced, morally ambiguous, and overall very interesting article with no strong opinions one way or the other!
