Basic Trope Description: A toppled government isn't gone, just forced into exile after a revolution or invasion, and still works there.
- Straight: After the Day of the Jackboot happens to Troperia, President Bob and many members of his parliament escape to Clicheria, where they hide and plan their return.
- Exaggerated: After the Day of the Jackboot, President Bob, Vice President Alice and everyone in the parliament save themselves to Clicheria - and they also take the whole parliament building, the whole law enforcement, everyone working in administration and all firefighters with them.
- Downplayed: After he is toppled in a Day of the Jackboot, President Bob is granted political asylum in Clicheria.
- Justified: Those behind the Day of the Jackboot are, of course, out to get the members of the old government to Make an Example of Them. And President Bob happens to have had strong ties to Clicheria.
- Inverted: A group of terrorists goes into exile after failing to pull a Day of the Jackboot.
- Subverted: Allie, a member of La Résistance, travels to Clicheria to meet with an allied group that presented itself as the old government, what gives her hope. But her contact person in Clicheria arrests her and brings her into an interrogation room, telling Alice that the old government of Troperia doesn't exist anymore.
- Double Subverted: Her contact person is in fact a member of the Government in Exile and took the cover of an undercover agent. The interrogation room serves as a place for talking in peace.
- Enforced: "We need the audience to know that La Résistance have good reasons to fight! That their fight has good chances of not ending up pointless! That things could go well after toppling The Generalissimo!" "Let's send the toppled president and his government just into exile! Rightful King Returns in the end, but with a democracy!" "Okay!"
- Averted: The old government is, sad as it may be, dead and gone.
- Parodied: President Bob lives in a large villa in Clicheria, in which he walks around in a fine suit and lives the life of a president - and people around him have to remember him frequently that he isn't really the President of Troperia anymore, but in exile.
- Zigzagged: Some of the old government are dead, some officially in exile and some just disappeared.
- Lampshaded: "They say President Bob isn't dead, just...elsewhere. And same for quite a bunch of others..."
- Discussed: "Some members of the parliament were executed in public today. Soon they will all be gone. Didn't think I would miss them once..." "Well, people say some could escape and are building a government in exile." "Really? You believe that?" "Yes, I do. Democracy can still come back."
- Conversed: "I wouldn't be too enthusiastic. Some Real Life governments in exile are there for decades."
- Deconstructed: After some generations in exile without any chance to come back, the government just disappears since nobody knows its sense anymore.
- Reconstructed: But then a revolution finally happens, and some descendants of the old parliament that are schooled in leading come back to assist in building a new democracy.
