Basic Trope: A large cast is divided into teams with counterparts.

  • Straight: The twenty heroes of The Troperville Show are divided into four Five Man Bands, while the fifteen villains are divided into five Terrible Trios each consisting of the Big Bad, The Evil Genius, and The Brute.
  • Exaggerated:
    • There are hundreds of characters on each side, most of whom are part of more than one team. Some have different roles in the different teams; for example, Sam is The Smart Guy of Bob's Five-Man Band and The Lancer of Charlie's Five-Man Band. Even the neutral characters (neither good nor evil) form teams. Alice, the lead heroine, is the only character who isn't part of any team.
    • There are good, evil and neutral versions of each team, and gender-bent, all-male, and all-female versions of each of these. There are also several alternate universes with counterparts of each version.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified: It's less confusing to everyone if the groups correspond with each other.
  • Inverted: The teams are all completely different.
  • Subverted: Alice has a table of the members of each team, but it turns out that the team members in the same row act nothing like each other.
  • Double Subverted: ...Though they do have the same positions in the team.
  • Parodied: The good and the evil team look almost the same, exept with differently colored clothes and with all evil teammates having a goatee. Even Carrie has one!
  • Zig Zagged: Some teams follow the same archetypes, some don't and some episodes have members of each team acting completely differently.
  • Averted:
    • There is only one good team and one evil team, and they are different.
    • There is only one hero and one villain.
  • Enforced: The executives make the writers divide the heroes into groups.
  • Lampshaded: "Who was our team genius again?" "That depends. Are we talking about Team Fred, Team Ida, Team Vincent, Team Bill, or Team David?"
  • Invoked: Alice, who is in charge of all the heroes, deliberately organizes them into groups to avoid confusion.
  • Exploited: Lynda quits because she doesn't have a place in any of the teams organized by Alice.
  • Defied: Alice merges the teams into one group for the final battle.
  • Discussed: "We don't need to divide our team up. We never get confused as to who's who."
  • Conversed: "This show sure is confusing. But hey, at least they divide everyone into groups of Three Plus Two."
  • Implied: A different Five-Man Band is seen in each episode of the show.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice has Bob make a list of the members of each team and give everyone a number from 1 to 95. Bob then asks Charlie to list the heroes in numerical order and give everyone a list in order to reduce confusion. However, Charlie misunderstands and lists the characters in alphabetical order, which results in everyone being more confused than they were before.
