Basic Trope: Opening the story in a depressing manner.
- Straight: In the first episode of The Trope Chronicles, Rebel Leader Bob's hometown is destroyed by a nuclear weapon, launched by The Empire. His family is among the victims.
- Exaggerated: The beginning of The Trope Chronicles has Bob's entire country being wiped off the map by the villain's new superweapon. He's one of the few citizens from said country to escape death.
- Downplayed:
- The Trope Chronicles starts with Bob's home being destroyed during a bombing. His parents were killed in said bombing.
- The Trope Chronicles began with Rebel Leader Bob being oppressed by the Corrupt Politicians in The Empire, and his Big, Screwed-Up Family were exiled.
- Justified: The Trope Chronicles takes place during a war. Of course bad stuff's gonna happen and people are gonna die.
- Inverted:
- The Trope Chronicles starts off with the most optimistic beginning possible.
- Golden Ending
- Subverted: The Trope Chronicles starts with the destruction of Bob's home, but his parents were not at home, and they did not die in the bombing.
- Double Subverted: The reason for this is because Bob's mom is dying of cancer, and she bites the bullet several minutes after the bombing. Bob's father dies shortly afterwards.
- Zig Zagged: Bob's mom miraculously survives the cancer...or did she? The hospital she is in is then nuked by the Big Bad's superweapon, but everyone somehow survives....... as zombies. But they are Revenant Zombies, and their minds are intact. Or are they...? It gets to the point where the beginning of the story is a story in itself.
- Averted: The Trope Chronicles starts off with a middle of the road opening.
- Lampshaded: "Well, this start of the story went to hell fast."
