Playing With / Did I Mention It's Christmas?

Go To

Basic Trope: It's Christmas, but nothing too Christmas-y is going on.

  • Straight: It's Christmas, but nobody mentions Santa Claus or Jesus and nobody talks about Christmas or sings carols.
  • Exaggerated: There aren't even any visible Christmas decorations, or even snow! The only way you'd think it might be Christmas is because the calendar reads December!
  • Downplayed: Alice does hand out a few Christmas cards and wish Bob a merry Christmas but other than that, nothing that festive happens.
  • Justified:
    • The setting takes place in a country where Christmas is seen as less important.
    • Alice's job requires her to work on Christmas day.
    • Alice and the rest of her neighborhood are too secular to appreciate the religious aspects of Christmas and they also hate how overcommercialized its secular parts have become.
  • Inverted: It's not Christmas, but everyone's acting as though it is.
  • Subverted: Halfway through the episode, Alice starts singing carols, handing over cards and wishing people a merry Christmas.
  • Double Subverted: But she's only met with blank stares.
  • Parodied: It is Christmas, but everyone has Halloween decorations up.
  • Averted:
    • The characters celebrate Christmas as normal.
    • The work does not take place at Christmas.
  • Zigzagged: Alice is acting very festive, but Bob doesn't seem to know it's Christmas.
  • Enforced:
    • The story is an action movie originally set in July, but it was filmed in December and it was impossible to fully get rid of the decorations on the filming location, so a couple of throwaway lines were added about how it's An Ass-Kicking Christmas and filming carried on.
    • The work takes place at or around Christmas, but the execs insist that there can't be any references to the festive season to avoid tying the work to a specific time of year.
  • Lampshaded: "If it weren't for the fact that the Christmas decorations are up, you'd forget it's Christmas!"
  • Invoked: Bob disallows anyone to mention Christmas for whatever reason.
  • Defied: Alice decides to get into the spirit no matter what.
  • Discussed: "It is Christmas, isn't it?"
  • Conversed: "These characters need to get into the spirit of Christmas!"
  • Implied: Alice says that last year, nobody was in the Christmas spirit, to the point it felt like it wasn't even Christmas.
  • Deconstructed: Alice celebrates her Christmas like it was a regular day in the office, but since no one comes to celebrate with her, she starts suffering from loneliness and emptiness that she can't get rid of. So much for a regular day in the office during Christmas...
  • Reconstructed: That said, Alice learns that Christmas is not always about the snow or the feasts or Jesus or Santa or church bells. There are many other things to do during Christmas, so why not let Alice explore them?
  • Played for Laughs: There's a Running Gag of Alice reminding her friends that it's Christmas.
  • Played for Drama: The protagonists are suffering from seasonal depression. Christmas means nothing to them.
  • Played for Horror: When the Apocalypse has ravaged all of humanity, holidays aren't that important anymore.

Did I Mention It's Christmas? I mean, surely you see the snow on the ground and all that, right?
