Playing With / Car Radio Dispute

Go To

Basic Trope: Characters can't agree on what music to listen to in the car.

  • Straight: Wendy likes listening to Teen Pop, and has it on the car radio. Lance would much rather listen to Punk Rock, and changes the radio station while Wendy is singing along.
  • Exaggerated: Wendy wants to listen to Teen Pop, Lance likes Punk Rock, Billy is really into Country Music, and Max is into Dark Wave. They all start fighting over what music to listen to, while Wendy is trying to drive.
  • Downplayed:
    • Lance doesn't try to change the music, he just asks Wendy if they can put on something else.
    • Wendy and Lance both like pop music, but have different specific tastes. Lance wishes that they could listen to Bedroom Pop instead, but he's still okay with Teen Pop.
  • Justified: Lance doesn't want to listen to music he dislikes, and takes a chance trying to change it.
  • Subverted: Lance reaches for the stereo... and then goes for the volume knob and turns the music up.
  • Double Subverted: He did that by accident; he was trying to turn it down instead so he wouldn't have to listen to it.
  • Parodied: Wendy's playlist of music that only she likes is labeled: "Music to Annoy Passengers With."
  • Zig-Zagged: Wendy and Lance listen to music they like. But then the station changes to something Lance doesn't like, and he asks Wendy to change it back, but she only changes it by accident. Then the radio signal goes out, and Lance puts in a CD of music he likes, which Wendy doesn't...
  • Averted:
    • Nobody listens to music in the car.
    • Lance can tolerate Wendy's music and doesn't try to change it.
  • Enforced: One of the writers had an experience like this in real life and wanted to include a reference to it.
  • Lampshaded: "Can we listen to something else?"
  • Invoked: Lance and Wendy are in the front seat, while Lance's Annoying Younger Sibling Bert is in the back seat. Bert doesn't like Wendy's music and annoys Lance repeatedly to get him to change it, leading to a dispute between Lance and Wendy over the music.
  • Exploited: Lance tries to change the station. Wendy is bad with confrontation and lets Lance have his way to avoid getting into further arguments.
  • Defied:
    • Wendy and Lance agree on a rule to decide who gets to control the music, and both of them follow it.
    • Flash, the driver, turns off the radio to prevent this from ever happening. If anyone ever tries to object, he cites this as a reason why he keeps the radio off, and if anyone keeps trying to pester him, he'll Brake Angrily and tell them to Get Out!

Back to Car Radio Dispute... and we're not listening to Artist and the Band while I'm driving!
