Playing With / Break Up Demand

Go To

Basic Trope: A character forces someone to break up with another person.

  • Straight: Bob beats up Tom and threatens him to break up with Alice.
  • Exaggerated: Bob blows up Tom's garden, points a shotgun towards Tom's cat and forces him to break up.
  • Downplayed: Bob threatens Tom to breakup with Alice.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Bob ships Tom and Alice and demand them to marry together.
  • Subverted: It appears that Bob is forcing Tom to break up with Alice, except it is a Secret Test for the both.
  • Double Subverted: But then Bob takes out his shotgun and forces Tom to break up or he will blow up Tom's legs.
  • Parodied: Bob threatens Tom to break up with Alice... with a BB gun.
  • Zig Zagged: Bom threatens Tom to breakup with Alice but takes pity on them and changes his mind and leaves Tom alone. However, he snaps upon seeing them all lovey-dovey together and threatens Tom to break up with her again but for real this time.
  • Averted:
    • Bob doesn't threaten anyone to break up.
    • There is no relationship.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Tom, how many times do I need to point my shotgun at you? Just give it up already!"
  • Invoked: Bob is a mobster boss with relationship trouble, and this is how he deals with people who are in love with Alice.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz mislead Bob into doing this only to ruin his reputation so Evulz can marry Alice.
  • Defied:
    • Tom delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown as soon as Bob is about to threaten him.
    • Bob decided he has a better way of sabotaging relationships.
  • Discussed: "There goes Bob. He's probably trying to beat up Tom again."
  • Conversed: "You know what, I wouldn't have to beat you up if you just get over it and admit that Alice loves me!"
  • Implied: Bob, who everyone knows has a crush on Alice, asks Tom to go with him for a little "chat". Tom shows up in the next scene with a black eye and a bruised lip and starts avoiding his girlfriend Alice like the plague.
  • Deconstructed: Bob's method of forcing people to break up eventually drove away all of his relationship potential, everyone only remembers how he frequently beat up the others, but not how much he loved Alice.
  • Reconstructed: But then Bob actually successfully forced Tom to breakup, and both Bob and Alice are Happily Married.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob locks Tom, his cat into a cage and threatens it to break up with Alice.
  • Played for Drama: Bob, a mobster boss, frequently sends his mobs to beat up whoever is in love with Alice, and they often subject to No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. The victims are alive, but they wish they never had met Alice.
  • Played for Horror: Bob, subjects Tom to prolonged Cold-Blooded Torture and locks him up for several days without food or water to make him break up with Alice, whom Bob has an unhealthy obsession with, and wants all for himself.
