Basic Trope: One of a pair of twins dies, to the grief of the other.

  • Straight: April and May are twins. May dies, and April mourns her.
  • Exaggerated:
    • April excessively mourns May for the rest of her life.
    • Every single pair of twins in the setting has one die.
  • Downplayed: May is grievously injured and taken out of the story, but she survives. April goes on without her.
  • Justified: Although they were twins, May had a weaker constitution and is killed by illness.
  • Inverted: May dies. April is overjoyed.
  • Subverted:
    • May isn't really dead, and she reunites with April later on...
    • Everyone expects April to mourn May, but it turns out she doesn't really care...
  • Double Subverted:
    • ...but is killed off again later in the story.
    • ...But then April breaks down about May's death in private.
  • Parodied:
    • Every mention of May will send April bursting into tears.
    • April instantly transforms into a depressed goth the moment May dies.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: There are no twins in the story, or if there are, none of them outlive their twin.
  • Enforced: April/May's actress is tired of Playing Their Own Twin and wants to focus on the growth of one character instead of two, so she asks the writers to kill off one of the twins.
  • Lampshaded: "April's really playing up the bereaved sister act, huh?"
  • Invoked: The villain wants to hit April where it hurts, so he goes after her twin sister.
  • Exploited: April plays up the bereaved sister act, knowing people feel sympathy for her.
  • Defied: April staunchly refuses to mourn May, and carries on like nothing happened.
  • Discussed: "Hey, April, if one of us were to die, which one would it be, and which one'll mourn the other forever?"
  • Conversed: "This book's got twins, huh? Bet one will die."
  • Implied: April says she had a twin sister, but doesn't elaborate.
  • Deconstructed: Everyone keeps associating April with May's death, so April never really moves on from it.
  • Reconstructed: April eventually learns to leave May in the past. May will always be a part of her and April will miss her for the rest of her life, but now she can only treasure the memories of their time together.
  • Played For Laughs:
    • "I'm so messed up 'cause I ate my twin in the womb. It's cool, though."
    • April has to deal with children screaming and running away from her at May's funeral.
  • Played For Drama: April feels like she has to fill the void left by May, so she starts taking on more of May's personality and interests to the detriment of her mental health.
