Basic Trope: A character is named after their ancestor.

  • Straight: Alan Tropington, Jr. is named after his father, Alan Tropington, Sr.
  • Exaggerated: There has been multiple Alans in the Tropingtons' long family legacy, with the latest one being Alan Tropington XXX.
  • Downplayed: Alan's full name is Alan Robert Tropington, and he takes his middle name after his father Robert.
  • Justified:
    • The first Alan Tropington was a very famous accomplished Renaissance Man. It's no wonder that many of his descendants name their offspring after him in hopes that they'd follow his footsteps.
    • Alan Sr. is a retired athlete and wants his son to continue his sporting legacy so that his name would be remembered forever.
  • Inverted: Alan is named according to what his parents suspect his grandchildren's names will be.
  • Subverted:
    • Junior is actually Alan's surname, and not an indication that he's named after his father, who is named Robert.
    • While there was a senior Alan, he lived in the sixteenth century, so the changes that our Alan was named after him areā€¦ slim.
  • Double Subverted:
    • His maternal grandfather is named Alan, though, and his mother named him after her father.
    • But not zero.
  • Parodied: Every person born into the Tropington family, regardless of gender, is named Alan, and the members of the family have to add increasingly long and detailed descriptors to their names in order to distinguish themselves from the other.
  • Zigzagged: Alan Tropington's father is called "Al" but the latter's name is actually "Alister" and not Alan as one might expect. Alister's father is named Alan, though... but that's just his stage name (his real name is Bryan), and he's not even Alister's biological father, but his adopted one. Alister later denies that his son's name came from the elder Alan's.
  • Averted: Alan is not named after his ancestors.
  • Enforced: The creators names one of their characters Alan Tropington III as a Preppy Name, and to save them from having to think up of names for the character's family members since the Tropingtons will become plot-relevant later on.
  • Lampshaded: When someone points out Alan's similarities with his father, Alan remarks, "Well, I am named after him, so that's kind of a given."
  • Invoked: The Tropington's family tradition dictates that the first-born son of the head of the family must be named "Alan".
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alan Tropington wants to name his son after himself, but his wife names him Jack instead.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Alan's dad and his friends refer to Alan as "Junior" but his dad's given name is never revealed.
  • Played For Laughs:
    • During a parent-teacher meeting, Alan Jr.'s teacher talks about the boy's behavior, and his father reacts as though the teacher is talking about him, prompting a Running Gag where the increasingly exasperated teacher has to repeatedly clarify, "Oh, not you, sir, I meant your son," every few sentences.
    • Alice's husband has an Embarrassing First Name, but she is determined to name their newborn son after him, to the latter's horror.
  • Played For Drama:
