Ah, there's the aquatic horror we all know and love.

  • The mermaids of course. When they appear before their pursuers, they have a smile on their faces even though they're aware they're being hunted. To them, it's all just a game and most times they don't even seem to care if one of them is killed.
  • We find eventually out how the mermaids are there. They were all once human girls who failed to catch a mermaid and got turned into one themselves. Once they do, the other mermaids drag them down into the "water" to join them.
    • What makes this implication even worse is that they go missing without a trace in the world. If a loved one were to try to track them down, they will find nothing. And on the off chance they did find anything, they'll only find out that the victim is completely stripped of their personality. They become mindless animals to be hunted for the next set of girls who find the notebook.
    • And indeed the hunted part is the scariest part of the deal. The fact that you're doomed to be killed once the mermaid curse takes you by a lucky pursuer who needs your letter is indeed quite disturbing.
  • The fact that the spell makes any boy fall instantly in love for you without the boy ever knowing is just disturbing. And it doesn't even have to be a boy; the spell works on other girls and even grown ups!
  • The face Haruko makes as Yoshiko is turned into a mermaid and dragged off by the others.
  • The mermaids appear in front of Misaki, and at first you think it's them teasing her like they do the other girls who come after them. And then they get a Nightmare Face with wide eyes and gaping mouths of sharp teeth, and outright attack her. This is the first time something like this has happened, and at this point, we have no idea why.
  • The third chapter in the Yui and Satori story. Just as Asami is about to execute Reiko's plan, the mermaids suddenly appear in the restroom she's in through the toilets and faucets; in the latter's case, they look like grotesque mounds of flesh before returning to their normal forms. Upon seeing Asami, they instantly go feral and chase her down. Poor Asami tries to call for help but Yui mistakes her for a mermaid and nearly brains her with a crowbar. As Asami tries to convince her she's not a mermaid, the other mermaids start talking, parroting her words before they catch up to her, bite into her neck and feed on her like piranhas to the horror of Yui, Satori and Reiko. What makes it more chilling is the final dialogue between Asami and the mermaids.
    Asami: Stop copying me!
Mermaids: Stop copying me! (suddenly change into Nightmare Face) Stop...COPYING ME!
  • As the final story reveals, going on a mermaid hunt can actually reveal whether or not you truly need the flesh of a mermaid. That is because the mermaids can sense if you truly do love the boy and whether or not said boy reciprocates AND if the girl simply doesn't know it yet. However, they get jealous of such a love since that is the true love that they got transformed into mermaids over trying to attain. They will go feral upon finding out, transforming into monstrous, carnivorous fish-girls and attacking that person.
  • As of the latest chapters, it turns out that it's possible for mermaids to become humans again. But the method to do so involves a very gruesome Blood Bath on the person they love. This is first seen on an unlucky boy in a lovely, gory detail.
  • The Q mermaid's first appearance. She looks like a shriveled old lady with claws and blank eyes.
