Season 1

"Good night, ladies."

  • Criminals getting downright medieval public executions by hanging and disembowelment. And it's broadcast live on TV.
  • When Bet is brought to the execution site, a bag is placed over head, and she is referred to as an "anonymous" woman to be executed. Far from the stoic attitude she has during the rest of the time, while she is being led out, she is writhing and screaming that she doesn't deserve to be executed. It doesn't help when she is placed on the gallows, hung, and then disemboweled afterwards, like the rest of the criminals. Only later we find out that Bet is now dressed as one of the police, driving away from the execution site. Who was on the scaffold?
  • Lord Harwood gets tortured at the Tower of London. Then the 'Barbers' likely subject him to Mind Rape, Ramsay Bolton-style, given how he changes personality afterwards. Then they cut off his nose.
  • Alfred blowing Julian Thwaite's head off with a Sawed-Off Shotgun (pictured). There's only his lower jaw that's still attached to his body afterwards. And the same nice shot of this bloody mess (picture) comes back three times.
  • At Aleister Crowley's party, Martha suddenly sees the party stopping dead, and everyone (including Patricia Wayne) looking coldly at her and making way for her towards a giant humanoid figure with a goat head and multiple eyes — Baphomet. The Heartbeat Soundtrack doesn't help. Later, she wakes up completely naked in the countryside, with no memory of what happened to her... then it's revealed three days have passed and she can't remember anything she has done during this time.
  • Alfred cutting off a rude machete-wielding bar client's hand. And bringing the hand to the baroness who reveals herself as a witch. And she eerily predicted this.
  • The fascist Raven Society momentarily succeeds in taking over England.
  • Alfred realizing that his father is a Raven Society fanatic who is about to kill the Queen and the Prime Minister with a suicide bomb. Alfred has to shoot his own father and dozens of people die in the explosion. Even worse, Alfred's father has worked there for years and he is killing his coworkers, people who think of the Pennyworths as family.

Season 2

  • England is in a bit of a pickle now. The new Raven Union is on the verge of winning, while the dregs of the English League desperately try to fight back. Under Lord Harwood's tyrannical rule, England is a constant war zone, with only rare places like Alfred's club in London being neutral and safe zones. The Raven Union's methods of getting people to cooperate and their new weapons are frankly disturbing.
    • There is also the issue of a Raven Union Major, Sutcliffe, who rapes female prisoners during interrogations. One in particular Bet Sykes (and the audience) very audibly overhears before he attempts to do the same to another prisoner, Katie Browning.
  • An expy of George Orwell is tortured by Mr. Salt for releasing works criticizing the Raven Union by having his earhole stabbed, and then tossing his still alive bound body into a fire place.
    • John Salt is a creepy bastard in general, his genteel way of speaking barely hiding a sadistic monster. He even manages to come off as even worse than Lord Harwood, which is no small feat.
  • Project Stormcloud, a new chemical weapon designed by Salt for the Raven Union. When victims are exposed to the gas, they don't stop screaming until death, and their bodies become emaciated and mutilated beyond recognition, making the Deadly Gas from Wonder Woman look like a "clean" weapon by comparison. The Raven Union intends to use it on London as a last resort effort to conquer the city without damaging the buildings and monuments.
  • Aleister Crowley plays The Corrupter with a Compelling Voice more explicitely this season in order to cause the downfall of a saintly archbishop, who ends up humiliated and Driven to Suicide. It's almost as if he was Satan himself.
    • Later, PM Aziz wants to get rid of the liability that John Ripper has become to the English League, so he tricks Ripper into thinking Crowley is after him. Not only does Crowley outsmart Ripper in scarily effective fashion, he also makes sure Ripper has nightmarish hallucinations in a manner eerily reminiscent of what the Scarecrow does to his victims.
  • After learning that his wife Melanie was having an affair with Alfred, an enraged Guilliver Troy responds by violently beating her in an extremely hard to watch scene.
