- The opening scene. Imagine the Normandy drop scene from Part 2 of Band of Brothers, with the same amount of intensity and War Is Hell horror, inside a plane being shot down and falling apart as its occupants attempt to parachute out.
- Chloe's aunt was used in the Nazis' experiments to refine the substance in the tar. What little we see of her diseased appearance is horrifying.
- Wafner has forced Chloe to have an affair with him to ensure her family's safety. And we almost get to see what happens in the few times she refuses to give into his demands.
- Paul curling up in a corner of the attic heavily and covering his ears implies that that's the only thing he can do to not see or hear Wafner raping Chloe every time he comes into their home.
- Wafner's face when he injects himself with two vials of the serum after getting disfigured by gunfire. The fact that he has a Slasher Smile despite missing his left cheek does not help. This gruesome sight is the page image and the poster image.
- Chase's death is unpleasant, but relatively tame. Even Ed trying to resuscitate him using the serum seems to go well initially...and then it doesn't. The horrific alterations to his body brought on by the serum don't help.
- The French woman that Boyce finds in the lab being little more then just a head and some spine still alive through experimentations with the serum, begging for someone to help her in her native language.
- She isn't actually begging for help, she's saying "arrêtez" and "S'il vous plaît" over and over again which translates to "please stop." Given the state she's in, we can guess that by 'stop' she means 'stop the experimentation and let me die.'
- After the explosives sent to the installation in the bike with an unfortunate soldier detonate, a lot of the German soldiers wind up running about while on fire, and there's a brief shot of one soldier screaming with one eye turned white and bulging from his skull from the heat.
