Main installments:

    Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  • Thanks to the events of Chapter 1, Sayaka Maizono will forever be remembered as the first student to attempt murder and for trying to frame Makoto for it. While something of a Kick the Dog moment because it's murder and she's abusing Makoto's trust, the chapter actually makes it clear that she only did this due to a lot of extenuating circumstances: Monokuma pressing her Trauma Button hard, not knowing about class trials or the consequences of letting someone graduate, and that even after she put her plot in motion she was conflicted and could barely bring herself to do it, which allowed Leon the chance to fight back.
  • While Byakuya desecrating Chihiro's corpse was a truly vile act, people act like he tampers with crime scenes on a regular basis, to the point where they treat it like it's his hobby.
  • Kyoko inspecting the private parts of Chihiro and Hifumi's corpses without hesitation has convinced some people that she has a fetish for dead bodies. It doesn't help that she performs a similar investigation in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.
  • Kiyotaka has only cried at the end of Chapter 2, and during his Free Time Events. It's not very surprising to see a lot of fanart of him in tears due to the drama in the former case.
  • Makoto gets a lot of flak for not being as sharp as Kyoko, even though he's just behind her and Byakuya in terms of mystery solving skill and is arguably more useful than Byakuya in Chapter 4, since he doesn't fixate on the theory that Hina killed Sakura. He especially gets a lot of flak for not seeing Sayaka's incredibly obvious Dying Clue for what it was... even though said dying clue is only actually obvious if you're used to reading in the English alphabet, when it's likely Makoto doesn't even speak English. People also tend to forget that Kyoko, the only one to see the clue for what it was, is said to have studied overseas and presumably only got it because she was the only student familiar with English.
  • Due to the fan reception of Hifumi, it's incredibly common to see his motive for killing Kiyotaka boil down to having Alter Ego all to himself. However, this was not the only motive he had been given to drive him to murder; in fact, Celeste gave him very serious motives on top of Alter Ego's abduction that make his reasons for murder far less ridiculous than just for the love of an AI program. It's still not a sympathetic moment because Hifumi never bothered to question Celestia and went along with her plan even knowing that it would kill all the other totally innocent students, he didn't kill just out of Perverse Sexual Lust for a computer program.
  • Within that same case, Celeste's stated motivation for plotting the murder of two people, with one of them being a fan-favorite character, being to obtain ten-million dollars and buy an European castle where she is indulged by handsome male servants dressed up like vampires is so outrageous that a good many fans swallowed it at face value, forgetting that Celes is a Consummate Liar and that everything about the persona she puts on even down to the name is dishonest. Even disregarding supplementary material such as the manga, the game itself drops several hints that her real motive for the killings was based around self-esteem issues as Taeko Yasuhiro and the fact that she fell into despair of ever getting out of Hope's Peak Academy through any other method.
  • Less seriously, Kyoko briefly had a cup of ramen noodles on her head after going down the garbage chute to save Makoto. The image is so comically serious that the ramen cup only appearing for a few lines during a single scene hasn't stopped fans from associating her with ramen noodles and treating it as her Trademark Favorite Food.

    Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  • Nagito is definitely the worst in this regard, as the events of the story have made many people label him as an evil sociopath whose whole character is based around HOPE and wanting Hajime's dick. This despite the fact that literally everything, from statements in the main story to the bonus Dangan Island mode make it very clear that he's a far more complex character than how he's commonly portrayed by much of the fandom.
  • Fuyuhiko cried only a handful of times over Peko's death, and yet many western fans seem to think that he's literally incapable of doing anything without her.
  • Mahiru's introduction had her telling Hajime to act more like a man, and after Monokuma takes over, arranging a girls-only get-together. Many fans promptly labeled her as a misandrist and treat her supposedly hating men as one of her key character traits. While she is very much stuck on gender roles and is much harsher towards the male characters than the girls (with her excuse being that she grew up with a lazy bum of a father, whom she still loves regardless) the fact remains that many fans blow her sexism out of proportion and ignore her positive traits in the process. She softens up a little with Hajime if you do her Free Time events too as it is heavily implied that she has a crush on him.
  • As mentioned under Ron the Death Eater, Mahiru is criticized for hypocritically standing up for Hiyoko but not doing anything about Hiyoko's bullying (the example that is usually brought up is her constantly ignoring Hiyoko insulting Mikan, but immediately jumping in Mikan's defense when Fuyuhiko threatens her), but she never actually defends Hiyoko being called out for bullying; the one time she defends Hiyoko is when the others are getting on her case for something that really isn't her fault (her poor hygiene, caused by her not being able to take off her kimono by herself).
  • Kazuichi is not given much credit other than being a Stalker with a Crush and a pervert who is desperately trying to win Sonia over in spite of her seemingly being interested in Gundham (and vice-versa). Justified as Kazuichi's crush on Sonia gets more and more exaggerated as the game progresses and you wouldn't know much else about him unless you did his Free Time Events.
  • While Hiyoko isn't exactly a saint, many fans tend to blow her bullying of Mikan out of proportion or claim that she exclusively targets Mikan when in reality, she targets everyone except Mahiru. Mikan (and to a lesser extent Kazuichi) just happens the be the only one who really reacts to it, as the rest of her classmates tend to either ignore her or laugh at her antics.
  • On a lighter note, a Chapter 1 CG shows Hajime holding a glass of orange juice while smiling for Mahiru's photo. The fans ran with it and made Hajime's favorite drink be orange juice despite the fact that he's not shown talking about it, let alone drinking it, anywhere else throughout the game.
  • Chiaki's forced murder of Nagito in Chapter 5. In spite of her never showing any bad intentions towards the group, and in fact being designed to be their guide in the context of the game's story, Chiaki's murder is seen as something that deviates from her usual moral wellness. This is despite the fact that Nagito specifically designed his murder so that she was unaware she was ever killing someone, and he specifically targeted her so that she would be released from the killing game while the Remnants of Despair would die (and end up being given to Alter Ego Junko for her to possess). Most notably, she also never shows intent to kill throughout the entire game.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School
  • While Sakakura is a massive Jerkass to everyone besides Munakata and Yukizome, many people refuse to let go of him attacking Hajime while giving a massive Breaking Speech that provides a catalyst to him becoming Izuru. This conveniently ignores how he bluntly says in the same episode that he did it because the Academy would kill Hajime if he investigated Natsumi's murder.
  • Nobody can bring up Teruteru in this anime without mentioning the Sexy Soup incident and how it almost led to an orgy
  • Good luck talking about Side:Despair without bringing up the brainwashing anime.
  • Despite the show's attempt at rescuing Hiyoko from the Scrappy heap in Side:Hope, some fans clearly haven't forgotten just how much of a Jerkass bully she was in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
  • The respective last episodes of Side:Future and Side:Hope have this in spades.
    • After Tengan was revealed as the Mastermind, the only things people seem to talk about when discussing him is the Fridge Logic regarding his motivations and plans. While he is supposed to be a villain, people hate him for unintended reasons.
    • Ryota's role as the Final Boss of Side:Hope. Ryota started out as an Ensemble Dark Horse for being a kind dork and reacting to the killing game like a normal person, but the reveal of his brainwashing anime (and its role in the plot) wore him down into a Base-Breaking Character. He became The Scrappy after going along with Tengan's plan (not even bothering to question Tengan's motivations, nor does he seem concerned that a man he trusted for a long time just played a part in murdering a good chunk of his comrades) and being part of an Anti-Climax that made him an Easily Forgiven Karma Houdini. These days you won't find any discussions about him that doesn't bring up any of the above problems in some way.
    • The resurrection of the Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair cast (sans Chiaki). A faction gripe that resurrecting the entirety of Class 77-B renders Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair's ending moot, and it's created a Fandom Rivalry between the fans of the first game (who are pissed that Everybody Lives when Class 78 didn't get quite as lucky and that the Class 78 survivors played almost no role in Side:Hope) and fans of the second game (who were stoked they were revealed to be alive and well and were happy that they got more screen time dedicated to them being Big Damn Heroes). In addition, Chiaki's fans are pissed about how she ended up being the only Class 77-B member to stay dead after the anime.
    • Finally, there was Kyoko's resurrection. Ignoring the rather casual and last-minute way it was revealed, many people call it a cheap cop-out to her death and/or started calling Makoto a Creator's Pet, believing that Kyoko was resurrected just for the sake of his happiness, despite the fact that it was very clearly foreshadowed right from the start- you can even see a bottle of Seiko's medicine on the ground when Kyoko is poisoned.

    Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
  • Good luck talking about Korekiyo in any way that doesn't pertain to seesaws or his relationship with his sister.
  • Shuichi will always be known for replacing Kaede's role as the protagonist.
  • Miu getting killed with a toilet paper is something fans aren't going to forget anytime soon.
  • The ending is going to forever taint the otherwise positive reception of the game due to it being very easy to interpret as a slap in the face to the game's real life fanbase, instead of the in-universe fanbase who are having fun watching real people be murdered and traumatized. To give you an idea on why this is, Japanese reviews were giving the game glowing praise before Chapter 6. After the completion of Chapter 6? The most vocal members of the Japanese fanbase turned against it, with very few people defending it. It was not until the Japanese fans had a chance to calm down to enjoy the game. Opinions on the other side of the Pacific are...decidedly more mixed.
  • Kokichi Oma had one official artwork of holding a bottle of Panta. The fandom decided to roll with that and fan works often depicted Kokichi as a huge Panta lover despite the fact he never talks about Panta in the actual game and is in fact shown to drink tea.
  • Kirumi running from her own execution has become one of the most remembered things about her.

Spin-offs:

    Danganronpa Zero
  • The rather disrespectful comments that Matsuda makes about Ryouko in his first appearance (Calling her an ugly bitch and telling her that she is literally unrepairable) has led people to label him as an asshole who deserves no sympathy. This ignores the fact that the very next scene with him implies he actually cares about her to a degree. Not to mention, the ending even casts his comments towards Ryouko in a very different light, as he knows damn well she's actually Junko and is using the memory wipe to escape consequences for orchestrating a massacre.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
  • It didn't even take a day after the game's release for people to make jokes about Yuta being "that guy who got himself blown up".
  • The infamous "Motivation Machine" Mini-Game, which has Komaru repeatedly get groped by large gloved hands, soured the game in a lot of peoples eyes despite not even being very long. it also made Kotoko (who turned the machine on in the first place) into less of a Jerkass Woobie and more into "that girl who groped Komaru with that weird machine".
  • Nagito's entire role in the fandom's eyes seems defined by the infamous scenes where the kids bully him. The fact he spends the whole story going around being called Servant and wearing a chain on his neck has also been a target for mockery, even though he only does either because he's working for the Warriors of Hope.
  • The scene where Monaca forcibly makes out with a terrified Nagisa. It's hard to find fanwork of their relationship that doesn't reference it in some way.
  • The first thing that the fandom will say whenever Haiji Towa is brought up is that 'he likes [girls] younger'. While this is a particularly loathsome quality for Haiji, fans often ignore all the other things that make him a terrible person, such as being abusive to his adopted sister Monaca and being cruel to Komaru.

    Danganronpa Togami
  • Satou pausing Vol 1 mid-climax in order to start praising himself, combined with a few comments he made on Twitter, has basically sealed himself as having an enormous case of Small Name, Big Ego.
